Even if the film has been released a decade since we saw projects from Studio Ghibli, the latest creation by legendary artist and director Hayao Miyazaki, titledThe Boy and the Heron,has been claimed as another one of his masterpieces. Proving to be the biggest box office success of his career in the US with $31 Million in domestic earnings, the film was thought to be his magnum opus before he eventually retired after it.

As it turns out, that is not the case at all. On the contrary, it seems like the artist isn’t putting down his sketching tools anytime soon as he gears up to create another film under Ghibli’s banner. This time, the filmmaker will be creating a sequel to his old-time classicNausicaä of the Valley of the Windas speculated by fans.

When it comes to larger-than-life and fantastical Japanese animated films, the name Studio Ghibli appears naturally on everyone’s tongue. And making those creations into reality is none other thanHayao Miyazaki, a man who is revered in the filmmaking community as an exceptional visionary. With the release of his latest filmThe Boy and the Heron,it was believed that the film would become his last creation before retiring.

Not only didGhibli’sVPJunichi Nishioka reassure us that his retirement wasn’t in the picture anytime soon, but in one of his documentaries recently, fans may have gotten a glimpse into what the director and manga artist has in store for the future.

In a recent behind-the-scenes documentary, titled2399 Days withHayao Miyazaki(viaWorld of Reel) which highlights moments in the production of his latest film, fans were able to see the director sketching an image of who looks to be the titular protagonist ofNausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.Along with that, we could also hear him say“It’s painful to return to this world.”

Thus, many fans have now theorized that his next project may be a sequel to his aforementioned Sci-Fi/Fantasy masterpiece from 1984. This would also prove to be one of the most impactful films of his career considering just how beloved this movie was to many people growing up. Although we still have no official confirmation, fans are still hoping it to be true.

We do hope that there is a sequel to the film, especially as there was much more to explore in the manga created by the director. Plus, the world will never be a place that couldn’t accommodate another film by Miyazaki.
