The trailer for Nicole Kidman’s Erotic ThrillerBabygirlis out for everyone to watch after the film blew the audiences away at the Venice Film Festival. Along with a roaring 7-minute standing ovation, it also won Kidman the esteemed ‘Best Actress’ award. However, after watching the film’s trailer for the first time, many fans couldn’t resist makingFifty Shades of Greycomparisons and it makes total sense.

Babygirlboasts a stellar cast lineup that includes Oscar-nominated Antonio Banderas,The Iron ClawStar Harris Dickinson, and more. By now, all of us are well-versed with the film’s risqué themes and the overlap with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan-led Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) is too hard to ignore. But Kidman’s performance in this film could just be the masterclass Johnson needed before making her claim to fame 2015 film that holds some of the most embarrassing reviews we’ve ever read.
Nicole Kidman’s Babygirl is Here to Snatch Dakota Johnson’s Crown
As theBabygirl-Fifty Shades comparisons flood social media, it is only fair to enlist some similarities both movies share. A female director helms both films,Bodies Bodies BodiesDirector Halina Reijn HelmsNicole Kidman‘s audacious film while Sam Taylor-Johnson did the honors forDakota Johnson‘s 2015 flick. Moreover, both films explore common themes of sexual desire and power. Unfortunately, that’s where the commonalities stop.
Unlike theFifty Shades of Greytrailer, theBabygirlone does not openly featurehighly erotic scenesdespite the film’s theme. We know what the film will be about, but it’s not too desperate to show us the best parts yet. Moreover, the brewing tension between the leads does a genius job of pulling viewers in at first glance itself.

“I don’t really think it was”: Nicole Kidman Didn’t Blame Stanley Kubrick for Her Marriage to Tom Cruise Falling Apart Despite Numerous Claims
From the trailer, we also gather that the film does its female lead way more justice than Johnson’s 2015 one ever did. UnlikeFifty Shades of Grey,Babygirldoesn’t portray some glossy fantasy but a palpable human experience. Kidman’s character is that of a high-achieving woman juggling between a high-profile career and a family life while tussling with her own desires and needs. It’s a far more meatier role than Johnson got a shot at in Fifty Shades. But oh well, we can blame the books for that. We don’t blame you if this film also makes you think ofKidman’s erotic film with ex-husband Tom Cruise.
Many comments underBabygirl’s YouTube trailer have Fifty Shades references and it makes total sense.

“A24 out here making their better version of 50 Shades of Grey”
“It’s like 50 Shades written by someone without only Twilight on their mind”

Johnson can surely hold Kidman’s beer on this one although one cannot overlook all the extra years of acting experience Kidman has over Johnson.
Babygirl Addresses One Thing Fifty Shades Never Did
During its Venice Film Festival days, Director Reijn noted that Babygirladdressesthe “huge orgasm gap” between men and women. “How many such scenes did Fifty Shades have?” one might ask. The answer is zero! Despite being told from a female point of view, the 2015 film entirely skipped out on an arguably important aspect of its fantasy.
One cannot deny thatFifty Shades of Greyis a highly-dated film for 2024. One might argue that it was dated even for 2015. With movies likeDon’t Worry DarlingandBabygirlgiving us its lead actresses empowering scenes, some films of yesteryears feel more like a parody than anything else now. Most fans can bet Kidman’s new erotic thriller will be a certified hit thanks to its rave reviews and successful positive underground buzz. One does hope that its story remains relevant for years to come.
