Nintendo will be holding the first Direct of 2022 this February 9, and fans of the legendary JRPG seriesMother/EarthBoundare now on fire following a certain tweet from the series' director.
Shigesato Itoi, the main creator of theMotherseries, might have some new project in store for his fans. TheMotherseries, which started on Famicom, and had its second episode localized in North America on Super Nintendo under the nameEarthbound, could be coming back in some form.
Most indie JRPGs have been inspired by theMotherseries, including games that became classics themselves such asUndertale. As such, every JRPG fan is now on the edge of their seat seeing Shigesato Itoi’s tweet.

Shigesato Itoi quote retweeted the Nintendo Direct’sannouncementa few hours before the showcase, triggering a wave of speculation and excitement from fans. The quote tweet reads: “7 AM huh, that’s so early, maybe it’s gonna snow.” Referencing the Japanese time of the showcase.
Itoi could be giving a hint to his Japanese followers on Twitter, telling them they wouldn’t want to miss this Direct.
It’s also interesting to note that the Nintendo Switch Online and its NES/SNES retro gaming section is going into maintenance soon. As such, rather than a remaster, or an officialMother 3localization, it’s possible Itoi is simply teasing the addition ofEarthBoundto the service.
Shigesato Itoi also has his own company, Hobonichi, which makes and sells things like diaries and notebooks. Hobonichi already made several products using designs from theMotherseries as well, like those from theHobonichi Mother Projectreleased in 2020. In the same year, Itoi also launched aMotheranthology manga projectwith 35 different artists includingUndertale’s Toby Fox. In other words, theMotherseries has been on fans' minds now more than ever.
