LongtimeMortal Kombatdirector Ed Boon has said that in the past, he had discussions with Marvel about creating a fighting game.

This news comes about in a new interview conducted byGame Informerwith the famed fighting game creator. When asked about when the talks with Marvel took place, Boon said, “I probably shouldn’t talk about it.”

He went on to explain that the idea of working with Marvel would be an exciting one if it were to ever happen. “We would love to make like a Marvel fighting game or Marvel vs. DC I think would be the coolest,” Boon said.

Of course, if you’re reading this and are getting your own hopes up that NetherRealm Studios could have a Marvel project of sorts in the pipeline following the studio’s upcoming release ofMortal Kombat 11, it would be best not to get too worked up just yet. Since NetherRealm is a Warner Bros.-owned studio, the likelihood of the company that works with DC properties to gain licensing rights to Marvel’s IP seems like a hard sell. That said, Marvel has shown in recent years that it’s willing to work with awide variety of companies on various projects, especially in the realm of video games. Even though the logistics of a project like this seem like they could be a nightmare, maybe it’s not as far-fetched as you’d originally think.

Do keep in mind though that Boon never specifically stated that these discussions with Marvel happened any time in recent memory. For all we know, this could have been something that transpired years and years ago. Boon has been in the industry for a long time, after all.

Still, it’s a cool idea to think about. If we’re lucky, maybe one day a Marvel vs. DC video game could come to fruition. The two brands have alreadydone battle in comic booksover the years, so it’s not like it hasn’t happened before.
