Mojang Studioshas confirmed that the upcomingMinecraft1.20 update will see the arrival of a brand new biome, known as the cherry blossom biome. The news comes not long after the studio confirmed the update would also see the arrival of the highly anticipatedarchaeology system.
Thanks to the expandedblog postprovided on Minecraft’s official site, fans now have a breakdown of the biome and how they might differ from those provided by the modding community. The lengthy post provides plenty of information not shown off in initial trailers, whilst upcoming snapshots and previews will allow players to experience the new biome for themselves and provide constructive feedback prior to the release of the patch.

The new biome will feature large cherry blossom trees with pink leaves, a much more vibrant aesthetic compared to other Minecraft biomes. The pink pixels appeal will also be a big draw for bees, pigs, and sheep. The new cherry trees will also serve as a new source of a special type of wood to form planks and decorate other wood blocks, such as the hanging signs, which will also be introduced in update 1.20.
Mojang Studios also highlighted the tree saplings, which can be replanted to expand the cherry blossom biome even further. The developer didn’t mention any requirement for the saplings to survive, like the climate, but they’ll presumably act similarly to other trees.
The upcoming patch also comes with a new archaeology feature, which allows players to search and dig up the desert for ancient ruins. Players will have to carefully brush along patches of suspicious sand to find useful random objects, such as pottery shards, and combine them into new decorations. Patch 1.20 will also include the Sniffer beasts that use their big noses to find rare seeds for decorative plants. The Sniffers are hatched only by finding Sniffer eggs with archaeology.
Although a firm release date for the update is yet to be set, Mojang Studios has said it will arrive sometime in the Spring. Players will be able to test and play all of the new additions included in the update in an upcoming Minecraft snapshot for both the Java and Bedrock editions on February 15th, except for the Cherry Blossom biome, which will only be available through the Java snapshot. It is expected to hit the Bedrock edition shortly after.
