There’s no doubt whatsoever that Insomniac Games is working on the sequel to last year’s release ofMarvel’s Spider-Man. The superhero title which launched less than 18 months ago is already one of thebest-selling in the lifetime of the PS4, with its sales all but ensuring that a follow-up game will be made. Therefore, the major question surroundingMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is less aboutifit’ll one day arrive, or more centered onwhen.
On the latest episode of theKinda Funny Gamescast, host Imran Khan revealed some of the information that he seemingly knows about thisMarvel’s Spider-Mansequel. Khan, who is a former Senior Editor at Game Informer, stated that he believes the game will release sometime during “Christmas 2021.” He went on to state that he is familiar with some secretive details about the project saying, “I know too much about this, so I can’t speculate too much. I think aSpider-Man 2will come sooner than we think.”
Khan also cites Sony’s propensity to promote the originalMarvel’s Spider-Manrunning on PS5 hardware as a reason why the sequel might come about within a year or so of the company’s newest hardware. For those unaware, earlier this yearSony showed off the power of the PS5and how it compares to the current PS4 and chose to highlightMarvel’s Spider-Manand how it runs on the upcoming platform. This demo was meant to illustrate how much more quickly the PS5 will be able to load games by comparison to the PS4. As such, ifMarvel’s Spider-Manis the game being used as a sort of litmus test on PS5 hardware to shareholders and consumers, it’d make sense to then show what the platform can do with a game natively developed for the console.
Again, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt for the moment. While Khan might have some solid insider information onMarvel’s Spider-Man 2right now, internal development timelines are always subject to change. Justlook at what happened toThe Last of Us Part IIlast month. Still, the info being shared here does seem to be legitimate, at least for now.
Insomniac Games is surely hard at work on thisMarvel’s Spider-Mansequel at this very moment, especially consideringSony now owns the studio. If a release forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2really is planned to occur in less than two years, perhaps we’ll see the game formally revealed next year as we begin seeing more of the PS5.
