It seems like Sony is learning from its mistakes with its multiplatform efforts, even if it’s happening slowly.
Bungie,which has been owned by Sony since 2022, is currently developing their new PvP extraction shooter Marathon, a revival of one of their old pre-Halo series that hasn’t seen a new entry since Marathon Infinity, which released in 1996.
Marathon will be released on PC and Xbox Series X|S in addition to PS5, and when a member of the game’s official Discord server asked if PC and Xbox owners would need a PSN account to play, Bungie had a very simple and clear answer (reported byEurogamer).
“Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for players on PC and Xbox.”
Learning From Controversy
The requirement of a PSN account on non-PlayStation platforms is a reasonable thing for players to be concerned about when it comes to Sony’s multiplatform efforts.
The biggest controversy related to PSN accounts occurred back in 2024 withHelldivers 2, when Sony retroactivelyforced owners of the game on Steam to link their PSN accountin order to continue playing.
Sonyreversed the decision just days laterafter a wave of review bombing, and has sincemade account linking optional in their other multiplatform games.

According to the allegations, Sony and Bungie used Chris Barrett as a scapegoat.
We still haven’t seen much of the new Marathon game yet,aside from some of the classesand occasional cases offans finding info hidden on Steamoreven in the files for Bungie’s own Destiny 2.
However, it looks like we won’t need to wait long before we see more, with Bungie planning alivestream focused on the game to show off gameplay on April 12.
What we do know is that Marathon will be a multiplayer-focused PvP extraction shooter and a live service game, unlike the original trilogy which were single-player games with robust multiplayer modes, and it survivedthe wave of cancelations of live service games by Sonyearlier this year, not to mentionscandal within its own development team.
