The Secret of Hayao Miyazaki’s Movies

Talking aboutSpirited Away, Miyazaki revealed that he personally draws thousands of frames by hand. He then takes these hand drawings and digitizes them to enrich the visual look. The essence of a hand-drawn frame cannot be developed through a computer, and that is probably the main element that resulted in continued success forHayao Miyazaki.

We take [handmade] cell animation and digitize it in order to enrich the visual look, but everything starts with the human hand drawing. And the color standard is dictated by the background. We don’t make up a color on the computer. Without creating those rigid standards we’ll just be caught up In the whirlpool of computerization.

According to the director, every handmade drawing is 2-D as it creates movement and space on paper, but the same drawing when done on a computer makes the frame 3-D.
