Yesterday, Sony released a minor system update for thePS5. This is the same kind of patch that we usually receive, even during the PS4 generation, which incorporates stability improvements.
However, there’s one major thing that yesterday’s PS5 patch applied that Sony didn’t specify in the changelog, and that’s fixing the VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) issues gamers have been experiencing for months.

The Switch 2 version is also expected to be released in a few months, too.
The PS5 update released was version 25.04-11.40.00, so if you see your console’s firmware with that number, then you’re all set.

New PS5 Firmware Update Finally Solves VRR Issue
While Sony’s official changelog for the PS5 system update just mentions, “We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens,” it’s now been confirmed that this also fixes the VRR issue as well.
The tech gurus atDigital Foundrymentioned that Sony contacted them to confirm that this patch has discreetly addressed the VRR issues. “As already detected by some - the latest PlayStation firmware resolves the VRR hiccup issue. When I find a spare moment, I’ll test it out,” the outlet confirmed.

Even before Sony confirmed it, the PS5 community had already spotted this fix. For those unfamiliar with this VRR hiccup, it was an issue as the same time as the PS5 Pro was released last year. It affected players who had VRR activated and were playing games with an unlocked framerate that wasn’t hitting close to 60-120 frames-per-second. For games that hovered around the 70-90fps mark, these titles were affected, while those close to 60fps or 120fps were not.
Some games affected by this issue include Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, The Last of Us Part 2, Horizon Forbidden West, and others.

We’re in for a long summer.
It took Sony months to resolve this issue, which likely meant it was a more significant technical hurdle than initially thought. What’s odd here is that it’s not mentioned in the patch notes. It would have been a mark in the win column for Sony, unless they didn’t want to highlight the issue in the first place?
At the very least, those who suffered from framerate hiccups due to VRR, that issue is now resolved. Chances are high that we’ll hear about the next major PS5 system update that adds in new features before the year is out, and once we know more about that, we’ll let our readers know.
