Before the love triangle of Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie-Jennifer Aniston became the biggest celebrity scandal of the 2000s, we had another celebrity love triangle in the ’90s. Kiefer Sutherland was all set to marry Julia Roberts in 1991, but the marriage never happened and Roberts was later spotted with actor Jason Patric, who was one of Sutherland’s best friends.
The news outlets wrote a story similar toRunaway Bride, where Roberts allegedly ran away with Patric to Dublin, Ireland, on the day she was supposed to marry Sutherland. However, all three parties involved later dismissed the story and confirmed that Roberts definitely didn’t elope on the day of her marriage.

They took it to the next step when it was announced that they would get married on August 18, 2025, when he was 24 and she was 23.

However, on the day of the supposed wedding, Roberts was seen on a date with Patric. The two of them later flew together to Dublin, according toPeople. There were stories written about Roberts, the real-life runaway bride. A year after the scandal, she broke up with Patric.
The three of them have since sorted out the issues between them. Patric and Sutherland reunited in the 2011 Broadway play,That Championship Season. The24actor revealed toRolling Stonein a 2006 interview that he only had one issue about Patric and Roberts’ relationship after his breakup. He shared that he had to find out about it from a stranger. He shared:
It’s not a matter of that. We were friends, and I’m surprised that I never got a call from him saying I’ve fallen in love with da-da-da. Instead, I found out from a stranger.
Sutherland and Patric later appeared together on theInside of Youpodcast with Michael Rosenbaum. They touched upon the love triangle, with Sutherland admitting that it was adifficult time for him after the breakup. However, he had clearly moved on from Roberts. He shared:
But look honestly, the truth, where I’m coming from, you fall in love, you fall in love, there’s nothing you can do about that. She’s an extraordinary person and he is too and timing is what it is and everybody moves on from that.
After Patric, Roberts fell for Lyle Lovett and married him in 1993. The couple got divorced in 1995. She then married cinematographer Daniel Moder in 2002. Sutherland married Elizabeth Kelly Winn in 1996 and they separated in 2004. He is currently engaged to his girlfriend Cindy Vela.

Both Jason Patric and Julia Roberts dismissed the tabloid version of the events that she ran away with him on the day of her marriage. Patric addressed the scandal in a 2011 interview withVulture, where he shared that all the stuff about them eloping to Ireland was made up. He further told the outlet:
They had a relationship that ended and I was with her for a little while and it ended. They’ve both been subsequently married several times and I think they’re fine. But we never had any issue, even back then.
Roberts also confirmed that the cancellation of her wedding with Sutherland wasn’t a sudden decision.
