Like most early releases in Kevin Feige’s MCU, theThormovies were riddled with forgettable antagonists, which finally changed with the threequel. Not only wasRagnarokmiles above its predecessors in terms of writing, but the Taika Waititi-led feature delivered fans one of the best MCU antagonists to date, Cate Blanchett’s Hela, the goddess of death.
However, with the introduction of Aubrey Plaza’s Lady Death, the prospect of two potential deities of death co-existing in the MCU has been a little confusing for the general audience, which they need to address.
Cate Blanchett’s Hela and Aubrey Plaza’s Death aren’t cut from the same cloth
While on paper, it’s not hard to see why the introduction of another death-centric figure has some viewers perplexed, the explanation is fairly simple. Opposed toCate Blanchett‘s Hela, who is the Asgardian goddess of death,Aubrey Plaza‘s Lady Death on the other hand is the literal embodiment of death. Unlike Hela, who has a pact with Rio, which allows her to claim the souls of Asgardians, Plaza’s MCU counterpart is the concept of death itself: A fundamental cosmic force that isn’t confined by multiversal boundaries.

Hopefully, the MCU will touch on the difference between the Asgardian goddess of death and Death herself in future releases, and given the strong reception to Plaza’s MCU debut, Death’s return seems almost inevitable.

Although time will tell if the MCU underKevin Feigewould elaborate on the aforementioned issue for the general audience,Agatha All Alongshowrunner did tackle one popular speculation regarding Rio. Considering that Thanos in the comics wiped out half of the universe to win over death, since Rio’s introduction, fans have been wondering if she had any prior connection with MCU’sMad Titan.

Given how integral the concept of death is, it’ll be interesting to see how potential future stories will elaborate on Plaza’s character, which seems a strong possibility as death is everywhere in the MCU.
