Since the release of the original game in 2006, theJust Causeseries has always been about emulating the action that we see in blockbuster movies and letting players loose in a giant open world with its protagonist, Rico Rodriguez. Naturally,Just Causeis a prime candidate alongside otherupcoming video game-to-movie adaptations likeUncharted, witha developing film based on the game serieslanding a director and working its way towards production.

In a report fromDeadline, the upcoming movie adaptation ofJust Causehas landed a director with Michael Dowse, who was previously known for films such as last year’s action comedyStuber(starring Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista) andCoffee & Kareem, which debuted on Netflix this past April. The film is currently being coproduced by Constantin Film and Prime Universe, and has its screenplay being written by theJohn Wicktrilogy writer Derek Kolstad.

According toDeadline, early details on the film clarify that it will stick pretty close to the premise of the game series, with Rico Rodriguez as the main protagonist (though no word has come yet on who will play him). The film will reportedly follow Rico on “a race-against-time mission to stop the mercenary group The Black Hand.” Additionally, theJust Causefilm is also set to feature a female co-lead protagonist, whichDeadlinesays will give the film “aRomancing the Stonevibe.”

Historically, video game-to-movie adaptations have had a spotty track record at best. In the pantheon of video games that have made their way to the big screen, there are far more hits than misses, but the past several years have started to see that trend turn around a bit. Last year saw the release of Warner Bros’Detective Pikachu, which was both a big commercial success and had a positive critical reception. Likewise, earlier this yearSonic the Hedgehogdashed into theaters and not only was a critical and commercial success, but also became the highest-grossing video game-to-movie adaptation ever.
