Actor Joe Manganiello is known for his role in theMagic Mikefranchise. However, before Manganiello gained commercial success in films, his breakthrough performance came on the fantasy horror drama seriesTrue Blood. The series ran for seven seasons and gained critical acclaim before experiencing a steep decline.

During a podcast appearance, Manganiello opened up about his time on the series and expressed a very sharp opinion about the show’s cast. However, Manganiello’s comments have some merit, especially taking into consideration the lackluster conclusion to the series which had seriously untapped potential.

Manganiello recently appeared onthePodcrushedpodcast, reflecting on his time on the series. He revealed that he felt the show was wild, crazy, and intelligent and moved the culture forward in a meaningful way. He added:

What’s funny about True Blood was, you know, we were all really, really overqualified.
Manganiello explained that while the cast was very capable, the material was deceptively tricky, describing it as having Tennessee Williams-like quality.

TheMagic Mikeactor further made his point by highlighting how several of the show’s cast members were established actors, including lead starAnna Paquin, who was already an Academy Award winner at that point. Hence, Manganiello did have a point about the show’s cast being overqualified.

True Bloodis loosely based onThe Southern Vampire Mysteriesbook series by Chris Harris. The series won several accolades during its first five seasons, including multiple Emmy Awards. However, it experienced a decline in form post Season 5, which continued until the series finale.
For instance, Season 5 has a 79% approval rating onRotten Tomatoes, which slipped down to 44% during Seasons 6 and 7. The series finale was also widelycriticizedby critics and fans, proving to be let down for a series that started out with great potential.

The series also saw a decline in viewership with its final season managing to attract anaverageof only 3.48 million viewers, the lowest since its debut season. The show’s untapped potential was further highlighted by a planned reboot, which ultimately did not materialize.
Similarly, the series had a stellar cast, includingAlexander Skarsgård, Deborah Ann Woll, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Luke Grimes, who weren’t utilized properly and went on to find even more success after the series ended. Hence, Manganiello made a great point about theTrue Bloodcast being overqualified for the series.
