Over three years in the making, theJet Set Radio-inspiredrhythm graffiti action-adventureBomb Rush Cyberfunkfinally has a release date. Asannouncedduring the sizzle reel of this week’s Nintendo Indie World Showcase, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is all set to release on August 18 this year.

Developer and publisherTeam Reptilehas since shared a full release dateannouncement trailerwhich confirms that Bomb Rush Cyberfunk will be launching for Nintendo Switch, PC, and Mac via Steam. A note in the trailer’s description states that the game will arrive on other platforms in the future.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was initially slated for a 2022 release, however at the start of last September, Team Reptile opted todelay the gamein order to “take it to a level where we [the team] would be personally satisfied with”. Thetweetannouncing the delay also reslated Bomb Rush Cyberfunk for a Summer 2023 release window — and here we are today, with the game ready and set to go for August 18 this year.

Set in New Amsterdam, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk follows the figurative skid marks of graffiti writer Red, who joins the ranks of the Bomb Rush Crew. His groupmates, Tryce and Bel, want to go “All City”, and Red himself just wants an answer to the question of how his human head got switched out with an AI ‘robohead’ — banding together, the crew takes on the five big boroughs of New Amsterdam, spray-paints the town, and earns hefty helpings of street cred (via theSteam page).

Originally revealed all the way back in 2020, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has been shaping itself up to spiritually succeed Smilebit andSega’s street-savvy graffiti skaterJet Set Radio, first released for the Dreamcast in the year 2000, the literal Y2K. An Xbox-exclusive sequel titled Jet Set Future followed two years later, and ports of the original Jet Set Radio began to surface for PC and mobile devices in the early 2010s. However with no new activity since 2013, the Jet Set series as a whole has been parked these past ten years.

With the advent of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, the Radio-shaped void in our lives is set to be filled — Jet Set to be filled, even. Featuringmusic from Jet Set Radio composerHideki Naganuma, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk seems awesomely keen on capturing not just Jet Set’s skating and spray-paintin' gameplay, but its groove, its beat, and its big, playful heart.
