“I’m hiring great directors and great writers. It’s going to be interesting stuff if nothing else. That’s what I’d rather make, stuff that’s interesting and doesn’t work, than stuff that is just the same old thing that we’ve seen again and again.”

Previously struggling to get the franchise up and running, James Gunn explained his decision to build the new DC Universe. Learning from previous mistakes, and his experience with Marvel, Gunn therefore promised to avoid them and turn DCU into an unprecedented success. Meanwhile, addressing Gunn’s plans for DC studios, netizens share their opinion on the same.

Focus on Writers Should be James Gunn’s Priority

Taking toX, analyst Luiz Fernando addressed James Gunn’s plans and strategies for DCU. Looking back on how the DCEU almost ended with one pathetic grasp of air following its 15th and final film,Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Fernando noted how strong roles in relationships are required for the new DCU. Alongside good vision, the user claimed it’s also important to have a proper business perspective.

Addressing James Gunn’s plans of hiring new directors and writers, Luiz Fernando shared one condition that will ensure confirmed success for DCU, going by the CEO’s strategy. While stating the importance of having great writers over directors, Fernando explained what’s more important is having all writers on the same page.

“From a business perspective, it’s a interesting approach having scripts written before hiring a director… If there is something that both DCEU, StarWars & more recently even the MCU have proven is that if you really want a truly connected universe, you need everyone to be on the same page, quite literally.”

Explaining why it is important to have good writers over directors, Luiz Fernando stated that – if, when the director joins the project, he is greeted with the script in hand, it leaves no room for misunderstanding.

Also, from a business perspective, it’s a interesting approach having scripts written before hiring a director, if the intention for the#DCU, as a viable business model, is to deliver and profit from the benefits of a truly connected universe inspired by a universal vision.

“Different directors with own styles come and go if the writers room gang stay working together from beginning to end. This new universe, in order to succeed, will need team players, rather than visionary auteurs demanding full autonomy over the whole direction and narrative.”

Explaining why the writers’ room for every film and series has to stay on the same page, Luiz Fernando noted that Gunn can choose the best director for his films, but without a good script, it will make no sense in terms of the big picture. Implying that no amount of good direction can invent an interconnected universe, Fernando rested his case by pleading with James Gunn to focus on good writers and scripts over directors, to ensure the confirmed success of DCU.
