Garth Ennis, the celebrated comic book creator behindThe Boysand Marvel’sFury, has cast doubt on the long-standing rumor that George Clooney turned down the role of Nick Fury due to Ennis’ controversial 2001 miniseries. In an interview withComic Book Herald, Ennis expressed skepticism about whether Clooney had ever readFuryand questioned whether Marvel would have adapted his R-rated take on the character had a film materialized.

And while Samuel L. Jackson gave a new lease of life to the character, Clooney is undoubtedly a face fans will love to see in the MCU. The role of Fury, however, may never have been the ideal for theOcean’sstar.

Garth Ennis shot down rumors of George Clooney refusing the role due toFury

Before Samuel L. Jackson became synonymous with Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, speculation swirled that George Clooney was once considered for the role. Some reports suggested that Clooney passed on the opportunity after reading Ennis’Fury, a hyper-violent, darkly satirical series that was part of Marvel’s MAX imprint, which targeted mature audiences.

The reason the actor was even considered was that Nick Fury was originally a White character in the comics. This means that while the MCU eventually got Samuel L. Jackson as the former WWII spy, Clooney’s iteration would have been starkly different.

Ennis, however, finds this theory dubious. He noted, (via MovieWeb)

If it’s true that (Clooney) decided against playing Nick Fury on the basis of that Fury book that I did with Darick (Robertson)…I would find that highly amusing and entertaining. But also I wonder if it might have been more that…perhaps someone said to him, some advisor or other, ‘You don’t want to go near this.’

Of course, all is well that ends well, and Marvel’s search for its Nick Fury also ended in a similar fashion. Samuel L. Jackson made his debut in 2008’sIron Man,and has since become the definitive Nick Fury.

Marvel had considered multiple Nick Fury projects

While a Nick Fury movie never came to fruition in the early 2000s, Marvel had considered multiple adaptations. The 1998Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.TV movie, starring David Hasselhoff, was one such attempt. In 2004, Marvel Studios released a slate of planned projects, includingFury, but the film was never made.

By 2006,Castlecreator Andrew W. Marlowe was brought on to pen a script for a Nick Fury movie based on Jim Steranko’sNick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.rather than Ennis’Fury. Around the same time,Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surferdirector Tim Story wanted to introduce Nick Fury in his film, using the Ultimate Comics version based onSamuel L. Jackson. However, Marvel denied him access to the character, suggesting they had long-term plans for Fury.
