The scary element of Remedy Entertainment’sAlan Wake 2is certainly much higher than its predecessor. It seems like Remedy has focused a lot on providing fans with a proper spine-chilling experience, in fact, the studio added a small creepy detail that many fans may not have even noticed.

In the game, the areas where players are not looking often change, particularly during jumpscares. Initially, many players new to horror games thought this was a bug, but it is a deliberate addition to give players a proper psychological horror experience. One of the game’s directors recently talked about this small gameplay element, also admitting that the studio might have “overdid” a bit in terms of its jump scares.

We do use them just for technical reasons as well, from a mission flow and level design and gameplay design perspective – We had these two reasons, and they kind of were serving slightly different purposes. But for a player, it came across basically as a jump scare no matter how we utilized it, whether it was through this story narrative reason or for gameplay reasons.

This is a small detail but very unsettling as it makes one wonder if the objects have always been like that. When the game was first released, many thought this was some sort of bug that affected the environment, but all horror game veterans know that this is a deliberate move to scare the players.
Kyle Rowley Believes That Remedy Entertainment May Have “Overdid” The Jumpscares
Players had a strong reaction to the jumpscares inAlan Wake 2and now, Rowley admits that Remedy Entertainment may have overdone it. He said,
It’s difficult – I feel like we kind of overdid it a little bit looking back. Thematically, story-wise, they’re meant to be like a psychological attack on the character who’s receiving them – Especially in the base game, you know, where you’re getting introduced to Overlap Guardians, whether that’s Nightingale or Cynthia, they’re meant to be this kind of mental assault.
