There has been a significant drop in the VFX works of major films, including the MCU. Fans have often trolled these movies or scenes with bad CGI, and some wonder why such a drop happened. A fan on X shared an image ofPirates of the Caribbean‘s CGI work side-by-side with some of the latest sloppy work in the MCU. One VFX artist came out with an explanation that makes it clear skills/technology aren’t the issue here.

Earlier, there were complaints against major studios like Marvel and Sony for overworking their VFX artists. According to reports, Marvel Studio was severely understaffed when it came to the visual department, and they were also paid lower than the industry standards.

VFX Artist Explains Why Studio Is Actually Responsible For Bad CGI

It is not the first time that VFX artists have come out on social media to defend some of the poor CGI works in recent times. When one of the fans comparedPirates of the Caribbean‘s brilliant CGI work which came almost 18 years ago with that fromDoctor Strange 2andAnt-Man 3, one VFX artist shared the possible reason for the sloppy work.

The artist, @RassoulEdji, shared that they had a lot more on their plate nowadays that shot design and planning weren’t a priority anymore. He shared that with the right leadership, team, planning, and time, VFX artists could produce much better work than back in the day. @RassoulEdji wrote via hisX account:

VFX artist here, heres what happened: Clients continually change the brief, shot design and planning are no longer a priority, and we have a lot more work to get through in a shorter amount of time. We have and can create work better than back in the day, it just needs the right leadership team, planning, and time to ensure it happens.

The artist further added that much of the VFX team’s time is spent in post-production nowadays. More post-production work hampered their ability to work on new creative projects. The artist shared that they were often forced to scrap projects that they had already started or sometimes even finished.

The blame, according to this VFX artist, goes to the studio/leadership who make the crucial decisions, often against the VFX department’s wishes. @RassoulEdji shared:

The average film changes a lot more during postproduction now than they used to. This means new work gets added to our plate and work we’ve already started (and sometimes even finished) gets scrapped. The “fix it in post” mentality also doesn’t help.

As with everything VFX related, it’s almost always the studio/leadership team who is responsible for when things don’t get done up to scratch and never the actual artists fault.

It appears that the VFX artists on several CGI-heavy projects arestretched too thin. VFX artists are becoming increasingly annoyed about all the blame being directed at CGI, and it often undermines the passionate work they put in.

Marvel VFX Artists Have Spoken Against The Studio’s Workplace Treatment

Former Marvel VFX artist Dhruv Govil earlier revealed that Marvel was allegedly a horrible workplace (via CBR). The artist, who worked onGuardians of the Galaxy, shared that his colleagues were constantly stressed due to excessive workloads and tight deadlines.Veteran VFX supervisor Stephen Cerettionce lashed out against the studio, sharing that it had become their duty to fix the lousy scripts of the movie in the post-production (via X).

Marvel had also faced allegations of poor treatment of its workers. According toVulture, the studio allegedly hires a single VFX artist when three are required and pays them 20% lower than the standard industry rate. The studio was also accused ofkeeping a VFX company blacklist, which they used to blackmail artists into overworking to meet deadlines.

Earlier, Sony was called out by VFX artists, who worked on their animated filmSpider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, for overworking them to meet release dates (via The Direct). The studio should take measures like better planning, improved working conditions, and fair compensation to get back on their VFX top game.
