Natalie Dormer believes that she should have received more credit for the role that she played in HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Fireseries. In an interview in 2016, the actress talked about what made her character so much more difficult to play when compared to, say, Jack Gleeson’s Joffrey Baratheon.

The actress spoke during a video dairy made by HBO during the production ofGame of Thrones, where she talked about how she intended to play the character, giving audiences a behind-the-scenes look into what the role demanded of the actress.
Natalie Dormer believed a simple psychopath might have been easier to play than Margaery Tyrell
TheHBO production diaryhad a lot of juicy details about a multitude of characters, among which wasNatalie Dormer‘s Margaery Tyrell. The actress admitted that given the savviness and political wit that Margaery had, the character was a little difficult to pull off. She said:
Trying to play a character so finely nuanced that people believe you can be a good person who is also politically savvy. It’s easier to play a nihilistic person or a baddie; you have to get your hands dirty and have real talent, as Jack Gleeson [Joffrey Baratheon] proved, but it’s a simpler task to play a straight psychopath.

One of the main reasons that Margaery Tyrell was so endeared to the audience was because she was able to not only match Cersei Lannister, who had increasingly become a figure of hate in the fandom but also because of the genuine goodness that the character showed in an otherwise grimdark setting. Margaery would take part in the Game of Thrones but still have the time to visit orphans at an orphanage.
Natalie Dormer played Margaery Tyrell as a good person who could handle power
InGame of Thrones, it was often the case that ruthless, power-hungry despots would find themselves in positions of power, which they would proceed to abuse without thinking twice. However, the Tyrells were one of the few families that were interested in doing some good, as shown by their disgust towards the Lannisters and Baratheons, and their willingness to rescue Sansa, even if it was for political gains.
Natalie Dormer’s Original Game of Thrones Choice Had a Much Better Ending Than Margaery Tyrell’s Painful Fate: “I’ve never spoken about this previously”
Natalie Dormer wanted to play the character as such, as she revealed:
The thing I wanted to communicate with Margaery is that good people can, hopefully, be in positions of power. I think that’s quite pertinent. I’ve tried to make her a plausibly real, sensitive, good human being with the skills of a good leader.

Natalie Dormer’s portrayal of the character was largely appreciated by fans, who believed Margaery Tyrell to be one of the more likable characters on the show. Together with her grandmother, the political capital that she brought to the show tipped the scale towards the characters that audiences wanted to see succeed, but as they all know, it was Lena Headey’s Cersei Lannister who had the last laugh.
Game of Thronescan be streamed on HBO Max.
