Final Fantasy 14(FF14/FFXIV) is one of the longest-standing live-service MMO titles in the gaming industry. That is because the developers at Square Enix have continued to add new expansions, updates, and collaborations and this success has risen even higher with the recentDawntrailexpansion. But the devs are aiming for something you’d never expect.
The game’s lead battle content designer, Masaki Nakagawa recently revealed his even bolder vision for its future. A crossover withLeague of Legends, Riot Games’ iconic MOBA. In a recent interview, Nakagawa shared his enthusiasm for merging the worlds ofFF14andLoL.
Final Fantasy 14developer wants a crossover no one will expect
In an interview withGamesRadarpromotingFF14’s Dawntrailexpansion, Nakagawa expressed his long-time admiration forLeague of Legends. He revealed that he has been an avidLoLplayer and believes the two franchises could create something special together. He noted that iconicLoLchampions such as Aatrox and Aurelion Sol could be adapted as raid bosses inFF14.
I personally love League of Legends and have been playing the game for a long time, so a crossover with them would be a dream come true. It would be great fun if Aatrox and Aurelion Sol were featured as raid bosses in FF14.
He also suggested thatFF14characters could debut as champions inLeagueto bring a new and unique perspective to the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). He went on to call out any potential employees from Riot Games saying,
If a Riot Games representative is reading this, it would be an honor if I could speak with you!
FF14already has an established history of successful collab with games likeNier: Automata,Monster Hunter World, and evenFall Guys. So the dev team forFF14has experience in pulling it off and knows how additional gameplay and features can benefit the game.

Square Enix is no newbie at making wack crossovers work
WhileFF14frequently draws inspiration from within theFinal Fantasyfranchise, it has also ventured beyond its roots. The ongoingEchoes of Vana’dielraid series, part of theDawntrailexpansion, celebratesFinal Fantasy 11, Square Enix’s first MMORPG.

FF14hasproven its willingness to exploreoutside collaborations, as seen in its crossover events withFall Guys. These events introduced whimsical challenges and cosmetics inspired by the party game and showed the developers’ creativity in making such a collab work withFF14’s framework.

However, a crossover of this scale would not be without challenges. Licensing agreements, creative direction, and ensuring the integrity of both franchises are significant considerations. Despite these obstacles, the shared passion of the developers and their communities makes such a project more plausible.
Crossovers and collaborations in gaming have gone from simple novelties to some of the biggest attractions. Titles like Super Smash Bros. and Fortnite have proven that fans love a good collab. So we join Masaki Nakagawa in hoping that Riot is interested in doing it.
