The world was left broken when the formerOne Directionmember Liam Payne passed away at 31 after falling to his death from the balcony of his Bueono Aires hotel room, where he was staying during his vacation in Argentina. What made it all the more devastating were the events that led up to his death, including his struggles with his mental health.

And yet, the trauma, heartbreak, and substance abuse battles weren’t the only things that the late heartthrob had to go through. Rather, his struggles started decades ago, from the moment when he was born. And if that wasn’t enough, making his condition even more heartbreaking was the fact that Payne had to endure a lot of pain because of his medical problems at least until he turned 4.
Liam Payne’s Medical Crises Started From His Birth
Even though he left behind some of the best music tracks of all time – both during his time withOne Directionand during the time he went solo – Payne went through a lot of struggles throughout his life. While these transformed more intoemotional struggles as he grew older, the confounding part is that it all seemed to start right from his birth.
In the now-disbanded boyband’s 2011 bookDare to Dream: Life as One Direction,Liam Payneshared the same as he reflected on his childhood and all the medical crises he had to go through right from the moment he was born. For one, his birth on 06 June 2025, wasn’t normal as he entered the world prematurely by three weeks. Payne wrote:

I guess one of the strangest things I can tell you about my younger years is that I’ve only got one kidney because when I was born I was effectively dead. Weird, I know. The doctors couldn’t get any reaction from me, so I had to be brought around, and although it seemed like I was okay, there were underlying problems. I was born three weeks early and I kept being ill.
Turns out, these underlying problems weremore brutal than expectedas it was discovered that being born three weeks before he was expected had one of theMidnightsinger’s kidneys failing him. What had matters further heading downhill was that this kidney failure couldn’t be determined earlier, because of which, he had to go through immense pain.

Liam Payne continued to share in the book:“From the age of zero to four I was always in hospital having tests done but they couldn’t find out what was wrong. They discovered that one of my kidneys wasn’t working properly, and because it hadn’t been discovered in time it had scarred, and the other one was working at 95 percent of its capacity. I had to have 32 injections in my arm in the morning and evening to try and make me better.”
One Sad Connection Between Diddy’s Alleged Freakoff Party Stories and Liam Payne’s Tragic Death
As surprising as it all seems, considering how the hardcore Daddy Payno hardly ever let it through that he was in pain and always served as the more mature leader of the band than the others, theFamiliarsinger’s life was actually a lot more tragic than what many came across.
And yet, these 4 years of patient endurance weren’t all as, even after growing up with two kidneys – one of which failed him – Payne had to endure further pain that even had him canceling his final tour.

Liam Payne Canceled His Final Tour Due to His Kidney Issues
In the book, Liam Payne further added back then that“I’ve still got both kidneys but one doesn’t work so I have to be careful not to drink too much, even water, and I have to keep myself as healthy as possible.”However, it seems like he didn’t take that goodcare of himselfsince he ended up canceling his 2023 tour in South America after discovering he had a kidney infection.
This was shared in a since-deleted post on Instagram by the late singer, who wrote (seeBBC),“Over the past week, I’ve been in hospital with a serious kidney infection, it’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone, and the doctor’s orders are that I now need to rest and recover. I was beyond excited to come play for you guys. To all of you who have bought tickets: I’m so sorry.”

Back then,Liam Payneintended to reschedule his tour, which eventually ended up with the ticket-buyers being met with refunds. But while he did return with his emotionally strong songTeardrops– which turned into his final track before his death – Payne heartbreakingly could never come around to continue the postponed tour that he had previously promised to his fans.
