Elden Ringtook the gaming community by storm when it released all the way back in 2022, even going on to be The Game Awards’ Game of the Year, facing off against PlayStation’sGod of War: Ragnarök.Of course, as with previous FromSoftware titles, DLC was almost guaranteed considering the success of the game.

The official Elden Ring strategy guides revealed quite a lot about the title.

And that’s whereShadow of the Erdtreecomes in—the first DLC for the massively popular RPG. Though we know very little official information about the expansion, all we really have is a promotional image, but fans have begun speculation regarding not only the story elements but also the size and scale of it.

What is the Future of Elden Ring Looking Like?

Future Press released the official strategy guides forElden Ringin two volumes. Vol. 2 is where the fun stuff is. In the book, Hidetaka Miyazaki allegedly confirms that some specific lore clarifications are being left to discover and are being saved for future games.

Now the question is, is this a confirmation of a sequel toElden Ring, is this referring to the upcomingShadow of the ErdtreeDLC, or is this just a mistranslation?

The Old Hunters for Bloodborne is the longest DLC in FromSoftware’s history. Could it be beaten by Shadow of the Erdtree?

Well, users onRedditseem to have varying opinions on the matter. Some believe it could just be a mistranslation, while others believe that it is most likely referring to the upcoming expansion. And some had a pretty smart revelation from this news.

That’s very exciting. Even if it is a mistranslation and he is referring to DLC, it’s good to know they are planning more for the future.

I’m wondering if Shadow of the Erdtree will actually end up being closer to a “sequel” in terms of size and content.– @Arcade_Theatre

As this user theorizes, this alleged statement from Miyazaki could be referring to the potentially vast size and scope ofShadow of the Erdtree. This is actually very plausible, asElden Ringis already 2 years old, and there is still no release date for the DLC on site other than the fact that it’ll be releasing in 2024.

When one Redditor pointed out that the base game is already so massive and that the DLC is probably nowhere near that scale, another user made a great statement regarding FromSoftware’s release cycle:

I will be surprised if its less than that honestly. If it comes out early next year it will already have had about 2/3rd the time it takes FromSoft to bring out most of their core games since they done so with DSI. They got alot of groundwork assets for it, as it is, too. The experience how to make an open world, etc. 2 YEARS+ is a LOT of time for a DLC, let alone 2 years for FromSoftware, who manage to bring out quality in a relatively short time.

Buckle up!– @Life_Bee9750

This could mean thatShadow of the Erdtreeis a completely new experience that matches the scale of the original game.

In the same vein of FromSoftware’s release trends, another user pointed out that the lengths of previously released DLCs for their titles have been relatively short.

historically the DLC they have released aren’t very long DLC (time spent on bosses excluded), like DS1 was somewhat short, Ashes of Ariandel was pretty short, Ringed City was a bit longer, and The Old Hunters was long but that was only one DLC as opposed to the multiple they usually do.

Considering where this conversation is going, this could mean thatShadow of the Erdtreemay be the only DLC that FromSoftware releases forElden Ring,if it is as huge as rumors make it out to be. But if multiple DLCs are planned, then this may be a shorter experience than expected.

Regardless, there is still a lot to discover inElden Ring, particularly regarding lore. This upcoming expansion is seemingly focusing on Miquella of the Haligtree, who has been quite a mystery in theElden Ringworld. But then, there’s the origin of the Erdtree, mysteries regarding Melina, the Lord of the Frenzied Flame, and so much more.

It’s only a matter of time before we get some more news regardingElden Ring‘s DLC. But the question is, what would you like to see in this or some other potential expansion for the game? Are you excited forShadow of the Erdtree? Let us know in the comments!
