As the wildly popular seriesMy Hero Academiahurtles toward its highly anticipated climax, fans have been at the edge of their seats. In a recent exclusive interview with VIZ Media, creator Kohei Horikoshi spilled the beans on some of the most burning questions fans have been so eager to know the answers to.

Deku, Bakugo & Todoroki from My Hero Academia

Among the revelations, there was one surprising admission: a certain character’s popularity, which really had Horikoshi himself stunned. Here is the highlighted portion of the whole interview, where Horikoshi was asked about his opinions on the recent character popularity poll of My Hero Academia.

Horikoshi Was Surprised For How Much Love Shoji Got In My Hero Academia

Shoji is a character from the overwhelming seriesMy Hero Academia. Fans used to overlook this character until he suddenly became famous. Even after having only a few appearances and his unconventional look, not typically fitting into the stereotype of being a “handsome” hero, Shoji has still captured many hearts. Horikoshi himself said it in theinterview:

I told my editor, Imamura-san, that Shoji has limited appearances in the story and his unique looks don’t typically qualify as ‘handsome’ … so I’m pleased. I drew him thinking he’s really cool, so I’m glad people appreciate him.

It is through his different personality and other unusual traits that he has found a place in fans’ hearts and become so well-liked in theMHAcommunity. It proved to be that type of popularity, which put a smile even on the creator, Kohei Horikoshi himself, as Shoji finally gets that much-needed love and fanfare. Shoji’s growth from underrated to fan favorite is a testament to how varied and developed characters can make a series really special.

What Horikoshi Thinks About These Character Popularity Polls

Kohei has a rather strange notion regarding character popularity polls. He believes it is a medium for readers to enjoy themselves by being interested in their favorite characters and discussing them with other people. For Kohei, the popularity polls reflect the love and devotion of the readers toward the series.

I see the popularity polls as a celebration for the readers who vote, so as an author, I try not to get too emotionally involved and try to keep a distance if possible.

Being an author, Kohei tries not to get too caught up in the excitement of the popularity polls. He distances himself, keeping detached from the results. By doing so, he can remain detached and focus on creating a great story for his fans, not affected by popularity rankings. He keeps his originality and ability to keep crafting a great story in theMy Hero Academiaseries.
