Justice League: Gods and Monstershad a very original take on DC’s iconic Trinity: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. These characters were viewed in a very different light in the DCAMU’s 24th feature film, where Superman was the son of General Zod, Wonder Woman was a New God and Batman was a literal Vampire.

Bruce Timm had a hand in the making of the film, as was the case with most DC properties that were part of the Animated Universe and the Animated Movie Universe. Timm had a very specific vision for the character of Hernan Guerra, the Superman of the Gods and Monsters reality, and the son of General Zod.
Bruce Timm wanted to give the character a mustache to show him as less morally upstanding than Kal-El
In an interview withComic Vine,Bruce Timmrevealed his ideas for this world’s version of Superman, given how different he was in terms of his lineage and character when compared to the main universe’s Superman. When asked about whether the facial hair on the character was an indication of him being evil, Timm said:
I had to stop myself from giving him a ‘stache. I was aware of that when I gave him the goatee. When we did another story, Crisis on Two Earths, Alex Ross did a lot of those early designs for me and I specifically design the Marvel family and he said “Ok. I’m going to give everyone in the Marvel family a goatee… even Mary!”

I was aware of that cliche, but that really came from Terrence Stamp. When I started thinking of Superman being the son of Zod, I was thinking of Terrence Stamp’s face in my head, so that’s where the goatee came from. He ultimately didn’t end up looking anything like Terrence Stamp, but that’s where it came from and it stuck.
Gods and Monsterswas a radical take on DC’s flagship Trinity, which yielded a sort of story that would not have been possible with DC’s Trinity in the main timeline.

The characters inGods and Monstersare fundamentally different people, not just re-skins of Diana, Clark, and Bruce, which allows storytellers to go to some places in the narrative which is just not possible with the main universe’s Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman.
Justice League: Gods and Monsterswas Bruce Timm’s reinvention of DC’s core Trinity
Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have been infinitely reinterpreted in the DC multiverse. Some have been alternate versions of Diana, Bruce, and Clark, while others have simply taken forward the mantles of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.Timm decided that he wanted to work with the latter, but have a completely fresh and disconnected take on the character, one that does not echo or rip off DC’s flagship trio.
While Superman inGods and Monstersis not Kal El, Wonder Woman is not an Amazon, and Batman is a vampire, these characters still prove worthy of the titles that they hold in very different and interesting ways, without being outright evil in their intentions, or even their actions.
