The hype for Chinese developer Game Science’s upcoming action RPG,Black Myth: Wukong, has fired up after a new gameplaytrailerpreviewed a variety of bosses at WeGame. The Soulslike is preparing to challenge our combat skills once again this August, and our thumbs will be red raw after completingElden Ring’sShadow of the Erdtree DLC in the summer. However, the Black Myth trailer has also revived the community’s confusion with another 2023 title.
Team Ninja’sWo Long: Fallen Dynastywas released over a year ago in March 2023 and followed a fictionalized version of the Han Dynasty’s demise. The Soulslike was widely praised for its combat and morale system, adding a unique take on the genre’s blueprint, but it also managed to overshadow Black Myth’s existence because they’re under the same umbrella when it comes to category and lore.

No, Black Myth: Wukong Didn’t Release Last Year
After the new trailer for Black Myth: Wukong dropped, the gaming community was quick to shower the footage with praise, and some even confirmed it would be a “day one” purchase. However, it became apparent that several gamers had overlooked the Game Science release by mistaking it for last year’s Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - which we gave a 6.8 out of 10 in ourreview, praising its variety of weapons and innovative leveling system.
One X user flocked to the comments section tostate“If you told me this game came out in 2023, I’d believe you.” Another comment simplysaid, “I forgot this existed”, next to a Roman Reigns gif with a shocked expression. It would appear that quite a few gamers forgot about Black Myth’s existence and the extended development time for the game wouldn’t have helped matters, since the title was previously thought to be released no later than 2023.

In fact, several Redditors have previouslydiscussedthe similarities between Black Myth and Wo Long, openly admitting that they confuse both action RPGs. Since both titles areSoulslike gamesand they both revolve around Chinese legends, it’s understandable why some may confuse the two on a superficial level. However, outside of the similar setting and style, most can differentiate the two because Black Myth has a protagonist designed after the classic legend of The Monkey King.
Despite the confusion, a majority is sold on Black Myth, callingthe environments “beautiful” and adamant that this title is the “most next-gen looking game yet”, and we alsobelievethat 2024 will peak for Soulslike games.
