Denzel Washington went a little bit into his dark childhood life when he was asked about his favorite Stanley Kubrick film. It turned out that the actor wasn’t a huge movie buff in his formative years and ran with the wrong group at the time. Washington didn’t start seriously watching films until he was in his twenties when a talent show proved his acting capabilities.

Washington is currently nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance inGladiator IIand is likely to earn an Oscar nomination as well. The actor earlier shocked his fans when he shared that he would be retiring after a few more projects. He revealed a list of his last few projects and they look very promising.

He shared,“I’m not a movie buff. No, I’m not a big movie fan. I was in the street when he was making movies.”Further, the interviewer was taken aback whenThe Equalizeractor made a comment about his troubled childhood. During his early childhood days spent in Mount Vernon, New York, Washington hung out with the wrong gang. He attended the Pennington-Grimes Elementary School initially but after his parents’ divorce, he was moved to Oakland Military Academy, a private preparatory school in New Windsor.
Washington later revealed that it was a decision that changed his life forever. He shared that the guys he hung out with in Mount Vernon may have done a combined 40 years in the penitentiary. He added that they were nice guys but the streets did not allow them to grow out of their life of crime. He shared (via Cinema Paradiso):

That decision changed my life, because I wouldn’t have survived in the direction I was going. The guys I was hanging out with at the time, my running buddies, have now done maybe 40 years combined in the penitentiary. They were nice guys, but the streets got them.
Washington turned to acting and enrolled at the Lincoln Center campus at Fordham University. He soon made his acting debut in the 1977 television drama,Wilma, where he met his wife. He won his debut Oscar for supporting actor inGloryand later won aBest Actor Oscar forTraining Day.

For me, it’s about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. It’s probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.

Washington went on to mention the films that he is committed to or has been involved in discussions with. He mentioned a total of six projects, including the Broadway production ofOthello. Here are the projects that Washington mentioned that are going to be his final few in Hollywood:

After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do the film Othello. After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.
