MAPPA’s latest anime,Zenshu, has been making waves recently among the anime fanbase. The work has quickly established itself as a standout in the crowded isekai genre. The title itself has the unique meaning of “complete revision” or “redo everything.” It no doubt encapsulates the series’ core theme of reinvention and the efforts that went into making it.

The journey of protagonist Natsuko, who is a teenager who struggles to rewrite a beloved story from her childhood while simultaneously navigating her own internal struggles and encounters with romance.
Her internal conflicts with constant efforts for reinvention and betterment reflect the painstaking process behindZenshu’screation. Director Yamazaki and her team undertook this ambitious project that blends not only creativity but also subtle aspects like technical mastery and lingering emotional depth.

Zenshuuses distinct visual styles for dual worlds
Zenshuis unique compared to many other anime, unlike most anime that might just have one design or animation style that is unique-Zenshuhas two. In an interview conducted byAnimate Times, Director Yamazaki explained that crafting an original anime is different from a normal adaptation and poses to the creation team many unique challenges.
With adaptations, the source material provides a guide that the animation team has to follow, with a few creative liberties. To prepare for an original work likeZenshu, the team must do all the things that the creator of a manga would do and then do a bit more.

The studio would have a monumental set of tasks like establishing the setting, characters, and underlying themes before refining the narrative to entertain. MAPPA has taken themaking ofZenshuvery seriously.
What Is Lazarus – Cowboy Bebop and John Wick Creators’ Ultimate Collaboration With MAPPA?
During the creation of the work, over 100 settings and numerous image boards were conceptualized, and many were discarded along the way. This process demanded not just patience but also multiple revisions, a fitting name was thus formulated for the anime.
A nouveau and bold reimagining of Isekai
What setsZenshuapart from the usual attempts at originals is the dual-world setting. The real world is the one where Natsuko struggles with her creative challenges. This has modern style visuals and this animation style contrasts sharply with the “Perishing Story” universe, which has a very old style of animation. These have been done to highlight the differences andgive a visual impact to the audience.
Maintaining consistency and alternating efficiently between these contrasting styles required significant effort. Yamazaki had requested multiple revisions to ensure that the characters remained recognizable despite the stylistic shifts.

MAPPA’s willingness to go aboveand beyond to not just uphold its reputation as a studio that delivers good animations but also to showcase its creative capabilities by embracing complexity and innovation. This effort has paid off, makingZenshuunique in an increasingly saturated and repetitive genre.
