In the couple of weeks since its release, High on Life has become one of the most played games in the last half of the year. The story thrusts you, as a newly instated bounty hunter, into a chaotic world of alien drug lords and tyrants, on a mission to save Earth and the whole of alien society from the G3 cartel.

There is a lot to soak in while exploring the vast alien planets, fighting the endless waves of the cartel, and interacting with the bizarre locals. Here’s what you need to know before you take your first step into this wild adventure.
6From The Creators of Rick And Morty
If you are a fan of Rick and Morty or Solar Opposites, one of the very first things you’ll notice when you first start playing High on Life is the similar humor and voice acting. That’s because one of the creators from these beloved shows, Justin Roiland, also helped write and develop High on Life. This means you can expect lots of witty and deranged banter, dark humor-soaked storylines, and tons of moments where the fourth wall is broken. There are also many references to real-world things like politics and even Applebees.

One of the most impressive elements of the dialog is how expansive it can be at times. For example, if you start talking to an NPC and then walk away before they’re done speaking, they’ll literally comment on how rude you are. They also respond to how frequently you speak to them, whether you bump into them or ignore them as you pass by, how long you are waiting in shop menus, and even comment on you pausing the game during a battle. It all makes for a very charming and immersive experience in the High on Life world.
5A VERY Mature Rating
One way this game differs from Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites is in how far they take the jokes. Both of the aforementioned shows definitely have some adult themes, but they are all carefully wrapped in a “made for cable tv” packaging.
High on Life visually appears to be a game anyone could play, but once you take your first few steps into the gameplay, you’ll quickly realize it has a very mature tone. The game explores drug addiction, slavery, strong sexual themes, misogyny, and extreme violence to name a few, making it a game best suited for adults.

4Guns With Personality
Most shooters give you pretty standard types of guns we would see in our world today. High on Life brings a completely fresh spin to the genre, making the guns the biggest characters in the game. Each gun you acquire in the game is actually an alien called a Gatlian. They all have their own hilarious personalities and completely unique play styles.
One gun, for instance, Creature, is a baby-making machine. When you fire their standard shot, they’ll shoot out little alien babies that chase down foes, attach themselves to their bodies, and drain their health till they’re dead. This makes for a completely new FPS play style that is equal parts bizarre and fun.

3Conversation Overload
Your Gatlians are with you 24/7, constantly describing the world around you, harassing you, critiquing your play style, and delivering funny one-liners while you take down the hordes of the G3 cartel. At first, this is incredibly charming and hilarious. But after a while, it can get a bit overwhelming.

Luckily, the game designers built-in a feature that allows you to reduce the frequency of dialog your Gatlians deliver. Since you will likely get a bit overstimulated on the standard setting, it’s a good idea to navigate to your audio settings and switch the dialog to “occasional” once you start the game.
2Total Play Time
High on Life is a relatively short playthrough. You can complete the main story in roughly ten hours. While this might be far too short for most games nowadays, it actually suits High on Life very well. After you put in ten or more hours, you will have likely gotten your fill of the combat and the character banter.

As you play through the game and unlock new weapons, you’ll also get access to new areas that were previously inaccessible. So, if you are craving a few more hours of gameplay, there are a handful of collectible items you may acquire by returning to areas you’ve already explored.
1Where To Play
You can play High on Life on Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Steam, or through the Epic Games store. Since the game just came out, it is currently available for purchase at $59.99.
The game is also currently available on Xbox Game Pass, which is only a $9.99/month subscription. Being a relatively short playthrough, this is definitely the most recommended place to play it to get the best bang for your buck. If you don’t have an Xbox, then you might want to wait until it goes on sale first.
