Hell’s Paradise by Yuji Kaku has been the epitome of the dark fantasy and psychological thriller genres since 2018. However, before now, the series' greatness was only known to manga readers. Now, with the anime adaptation of the series underway, everyone has a chance to experience Hell’s Paradise on the screen. After an intriguing first episode, full of action, great animation, and exciting characters, it’s time for the second episode to build on that.

Last Time on Hell’s Paradise…

The story started with Gabimaru about to be beheaded by an executioner, but to everyone’s surprise, the sword snapped from relentlessly striking Gabimaru’s neck which remained undamaged. This left Gabimaru wondering why he was unable to die despite having no reason in life to live on.

The story then introduced a female inspector named Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, who interviewed Gabimaru and requested that he show her his ninjutsu skills, which he denied. Gabimaru then shared his background with the inspector, explaining that his parents were killed by his village chief when he was an infant, and as a shinobi, he did not possess any dreams since his only role was to kill whoever he was ordered to.

Despite Gabimaru accepting death, he subconsciously resisted it, as seen he was ordered to be burned alive, when he was pierced with a spear and tried to be torn apart by bulls. The inspector became curious about Gabimaru’s resistance and asked him why he wanted to leave Iwagakure. Gabimaru explained that he was the strongest shinobi of Iwagakure, and because of this, he gained permission from the Iwagakure chief to marry his daughter. However, he found her dull and went to his leader to fix the problem, which led to his betrayal and subsequent capture.

The story ended with Gabimaru being faced with Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, who revealed she was a highly skilled sword-tester and executioner sent by the shogun. Gabimaru sensed that he was in danger of being beheaded and caused his restraints to break from his nervous reaction. This prompted the magistrate to order Sagiri to execute him quickly, which she complied to do by instantly getting behind Gabimaru. Gabimaru moved out of the way in time and only received a minor cut on his neck. He was then asked by Sagiri to go on a journey to retrieve the elixir of life from Shinsenkyo.
