In the world of television, on-screen chemistry often masks the drama behind the screen for of course those who we see on the screen are actors, having an impeccable ability to mask their emotions. This was the case withTwo and a Half Men‘s iconic duo, Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer, whose dynamic kept millions of fans engaged, unbeknownst to them of Charlie’s struggle off the screen.

However, not only were the fans unaware, but even Cryer had no knowledge of his co-star’s struggles despite working with him for years. It wasn’t until the last season that he started to notice the signs.
Jon Cryer had no knowledge of Charlie Sheen’s struggles duringTwo and a Half Men
Charlie Sheen‘s struggles during hisTwo and a Half Mendays are well-documented today. It was because of his substance abuse and other issues that the actor was fired from the show, also picking up afeud with the series’ creator Chuck Lorre.
While the rumors of his deranged behavior already existed, this behavior became more prominent when the actor himself behaved problematically in the public sphere (seeUS Weekly). However, his co-starJon Cryerdid not notice much about Sheen’s issues until it came to the very end.

In an interview withLarry King, almost a decade ago, Cryer was asked how he handled the ‘tumultuous times’ and he replied:
It affected me mostly because he was my friend, we were work friends and it was sober for the first six years of the show. And we had such a great comedic rapport. When you start to see the cracks in the facade, you start to worry about when you have an addict close to you that may be starting to use again… If he was impaired, he was very good at hiding it. It was in the last season that it was noticeable to me that he ever had an issue…

Cryer, while emphasizing the strong bond they shared, revealed that up to the first six seasons of the show, there was hardly anything noticeably wrong with his co-star. However, as the series progressed things started to unfold, eventually taking the form of one of the biggest controversies of Charlie Sheen’s life and career.
Jon Cryer reveals that even with everything amiss, Charlie Sheen was still delivering
Two and a Half Menwas put on a hiatus in 2011, as Charlie Sheen was ordered to go to rehab and have his problems sorted out. However, things became worse and worse as time went on, as Sheen started making some controversial remarks about Chuck Lorre, the TV show, and even CBS, ultimately leading to his firing from the show.

But before the problem went public, up until season 8 (which was Sheen’s last season onTwo and a Half Men), the actor was still performing well considering his struggles. In his interview with Larry King, when asked if the home viewers were able to notice something amiss in the last seasons, Cryer revealed that while these issues were noticeable, Sheen did continue to deliver strong performances.
I believe so, you know, people commented on it to me that things seemed… he seemed different. It’s hard to really put a finger on it because he was still delivering. He had incredible precision as a performer and he was still getting it done… But it was off by microseconds, it was that simple. Just his timing was that different and he seemed a little brittle. I mean it’s hard to describe but because I worked with him every day for eight years.

Thus, revealing the very subtle, barely noticeable difference in Sheen’s performance, Cryer’s observations underscore Sheen’s remarkable ability to maintain his craft. Even while battling his private demons, the actor did deliver as much as he could.
Two and a Half Menis available to be streamed on Max.
