We wanted somebody who, in a sense, would reinvent the rules for Moneypenny. We wanted somebody behind a desk because she chose to be, not because she was simply a simpering secretary.
[We wanted somebody] who was also going to be able to go out in future episodes in the field, and was introduced in an unusual way. So in every sense, we wanted somebody who was really an unconventional Bond girl.
Recalling the process of introducing Miss Moneypenny,Sam Mendesnoted the requirements of the character. Stating how he needed to honor the classic character’s legacy while simultaneously giving her a modern twist, Mendes noted the importance of reinventing the character. Unwilling to showcase Moneypenny as a simpering, subordinate secretary seen in previous Bond films, the director stated his desire for an “unconventional Bond girl”.

Given how the actor’s screen presence often stole the spotlight from other characters, Mendes noted the challenges of finding someone who wouldn’t end up becoming a secondary character.
On top of that, I wanted somebody who could hold their own with Daniel and that’s not easy because he’s very good, and he’s demanding as an actor. And also [a Bond girl who] could hold their own when it came to action, so there were a number of boxes that had to be ticked.
Thankfully,Naomie Harriscame to the rescue. As the actress donned the role of Moneypenny, she not only reinvented the traditional character with a hint of modernism but also managed to match Daniel Craig’s wit and intensity as James Bond. Harris seamlessly blends into the world of action with grace, while simultaneously breathing new life into the character, who was previously portrayed as a subordinate.
But it was a joy, because [Naomie Harris] managed to do all those things and more, with great grace and patience.
Eventually, not only Sam Mendes tackled the challenges of reinventing Miss Moneypenny and finding a suitable actress for the role, but even Naomie Harris played a significant role in delivering the exact portrayal of the character that Mendes had envisioned.
