From the beginning ofOne Piece, the one thing that the series protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, has been adamant about is the freedom that a pirate experiences while sailing through the seas. In fact, the reason he wants to become the King of the Pirates inOne Pieceis so that he feels that freedom and enjoys his journey with his crewmates till the end.

However, while Luffy’s feelings toward freedom are understandable, his role as the main character ofOne Piecemakes it quite difficult for him to attain his goal. From dealing with incredibly dangerous enemies to getting his fate entangled with the history and liberation of the entire world, Luffy has to take on many difficult challenges.
These duties essentially come from him being the reincarnation of Sun God Nika, who is always at the center of every war that takes place in theOne Pieceuniverse. Thus, if these duties take over Luffy’s character development, it will disrupt the core message about freedom that Eiichiro Oda has been trying to portray throughoutOne Piece.

The central theme of freedom inOne Piece
From the intensive world-building to the unique character development,One Pieceis known for a lot of things, but the one element that sits at the center of it all is the importance of freedom thatEiichiro Odahas been trying to portray. Every major development inOne Pieceis linked to the concept of freedom from some kind of symbolic or literal restraints.
Zoro’s Friend Kuina Is Alive and Is a Marine Helping Koby: Eiichiro Oda Has Already Debunked This One Piece Theory
Be it Nami’s entrapment by Arlong or Sanji’s forced ties with his family, Oda has always tried to explain that in order to follow your dreams and live your life on your own terms, you need to break these restraints and be free. And the character that best portrays it is Luffy. He does not care about what others think of his actions and only does what he thinks is right.
He is the perfect representation of the freedomthat almost every character craves and thus, in a way, manages to create a bond with them. It is also the concept that links him to the previous preachers of freedom inOne Piece: Sun God Nika, the mythical deity, and Joy Boy, the first pirate ever.

Eiichiro Oda might betray the concept of freedom through Luffy
Although Luffy is the representation of freedom inOne Piece, his character development in the series might be completely against what Oda is trying to portray. In fact, there are multiple aspects of his character that in some way violate the theme of freedom that is so deeply linked with theOne Pieceprotagonist.
From his parallels with the Sun God to his connection with the Will of D., every aspect of his character that makes him special also adds a burden on his shoulder that he needs to carry one way or the other.

This burden severely affects his freedom, and althoughit looks like he doesn’t care about it at all, the story will essentially force him to deal with all of these burdens.
One Piece’s Ending: You Can Try All You Want But Eiichiro Oda is Not Afraid That Someone Will Predict How One Piece Ends
While this seems to be inevitable, it all depends on Oda and Luffy, as they will decide what is the best possible way to maintain the theme of freedom along with fulfilling all the prophecies that theOne Pieceprotagonist has been dragged into. Fans will have to wait for Luffy’s further character development to see how he maintains his image as the most unique protagonist.
One Pieceis available to watch on Crunchyroll.
