One Piecehas a lot of mysteries but the ones that might reveal almost all the major secrets of the world are the Poneglyphs. These Poneglyphs not only hide the map to Laugh Tale but also carry the secret of the Void Century that is the biggest game changer inOne Piece. Thus, they hold a lot of significance to the central narrative of the series.

Poneglyphs - One Piece

Although Eiichiro Oda has mostly taken his inspiration forOne Piecefrom the real world, there is a possibility that the mangaka got the idea for the Poneglyphs from a Studio Ghibli film calledCastle in the Sky.The film was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, who is one of the biggest legends in the industry and has inspired many other creators including Oda.

Castle in the Skyhas an aspect in the movie that is quite similar to the ideation of the Poneglyphs. However,Castle in the Sky’ssimilarity withOne Pieceis not only limited to the Poneglyphs. Another parallel the two great projects share is Mayumi Tanaka, the voice actor of Monkey D. Luffy.

Eiichiro Oda’s Inspiration For The Poneglyphs inOne Piece

The Poneglyphs are big stone monoliths that are inscribed with an ancient language. They hide the knowledge about the Void Century, the Ancient Kingdom, and the map to Laugh Tale. They are scattered all over the world, and the only character in the entire series who could read these Poneglyphs is Nico Robin, the archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates.

The Poneglyphs are extremely important in theOne Pieceworld, and the World Government has been trying its best to destroy them, but they are basically indestructible. There are three types of Poneglyphs and among them, the most significant one is the Road Poneglyph. WhileEiichiro Odahas never officially confirmed the inspiration behind them, it most likely comes from the 1986 anime filmCastle in the Sky.

Castle in the Skyfeatures similar stone blocks that are inscribed with ancient texts. They are also impossible to destroy, and just like the Poneglyphs, they hold the secret of a mysterious society from the past that was more technologically developed than the present world (just like the Ancient Kingdom inOne Piece).

Another Major Parallel BetweenOne PieceAndCastle in the Sky

Hayao Miyazaki’sCastle in the Skywas the first film created by Studio Ghibli, and it followed the story of Sheeta and Pazu, two orphans who are being chased by the Government, the Army, and the Pirates. The chase is because of a mysterious necklace that Sheeta has, which is basically a key to accessing Laputa, the flying castle in the sky.

In the movie, Pazu’s character is voiced by popular voice artist,Mayumi Tanaka. Tanaka is a legend in the game, and she has been working as a voice actor for almost 50 years. She is also the voice actor for Monkey D. Luffy, the main character ofOne Piece, and she has been playing the character for almost 30 years of her career.
