Coming two years after the success ofÂAssassin’s Creed Odyssey, fans of the series won’t have too long to wait until the next chapter withthe upcomingÂAssassin’s Creed Valhalla. As revealed this week by Ubisoft,ÂValhallawill take the franchise into the times of vikings, which may have some similarities with 2018’s critically-acclaimedÂGod of War. However, despite some of the common elements shared between both games,ÂGod of War’s Cory Barlog has openly expressed his support of the setting for the latest chapter in theAssassin’s Creedfranchise.OnTwitter, Cory Barlog shared a few tweets in response to the reveal ofÂAssassin’s Creed Valhalla, which was confirmed to be set in the era of vikings and appears to share some similar elements to the Norse mythology-inspired setting ofGod of War. Specifically, one of the biggest parts of the reveal that Barlog seemed to address was his excitement at the prospects of seeing this setting through the eyes other creatives.
According to Barlog, whileÂGod of WarandÂValhallamay have some surface-level similarities, he said that the Norse myths “will persevere through the ages providing countless creatives a deep well to pull from,” and that he is “very excited” to playÂValhallawhen it releases later this year. Specifically, developers from the team at Ubisoft addressed the comparisons toÂGod of Warin an interview withÂGameSpot, and that they hope to makeÂValhalla"the ultimate grounded Viking fantasy."
The viking-themed setting ofAssassin’s Creed Valhallahas been rumored for quite some time, even around the time shortly after the release ofÂGod of WarandAssassin’s Creed Odysseyin 2018. This might have led to some speculation from fans that the nextAssassin’s Creedgame would maybe draw too closely to the inspirations thatÂGod of Warused. But as Barlog said, there is a ton of potential for Ubisoft and its developers to take these well-known myths and create something new from them, especially in the historical focus of theAssassin’s Creedseries. At the very least - maybe we can hope for some kind of Kratos and Atreus cameo inValhalla?
Assassin’s Creed Valhallawill release for PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC in holiday 2020.
