MORE:God Of War Ragnarok: 10 Best Characters In The Game, RankedThe reboot of theGod of Warfranchise has taken the game in a whole new direction, and we have witnessed the Ghost of Sparta venturing into the lands of the Norse gods. While Kratos and Atreus did manage to fulfill the task for which they embarked on a journey in the game, they ended up making a number of adversaries along the way.
What is Fimbulwinter?
For those who have played the first game, they might have heard the word “Fimbulwinter” from none other than Mimir himself. When Kratos and Atreus are returning back to Midgard, Mimir states that the blizzard that started after Kratos defeated Baldur has intensified considerably into something which is considered an omen. When Kratos expresses his surprise over winter being a sign of an omen, Mimir explains that this winter is not just any winter but is known as Fimbulwinter, which will be spanning three summers.
Fimbulwinter is actually an English term for the word Fimbulvetr, which basically means “great winter.” While the harsh and long season makes it almost impossible to travel, there is a lot more dread attached to it than that. The reason why Fimbulwinter is considered an omen is because of the fact that it is meant to end all winters and be the predecessor of Ragnarok. Apart from two humans Lif and Lifthrasir, no human will survive Fimbulwinter, and a number of wars will follow.
Apart from giving us a brief overview of Fimbulwinter, the previous game also made an interesting revelation. Mimir states that Fimbulwinter wasn’t supposed to arrive anytime soon, but Kratos' actions have expedited the process, and Fimbulwinter has arrived much earlier than expected. With Ragnarok being the prophecized end of Asgard, the developers are concluding the Norse saga in God of War Ragnarok itself.
