Although the lore and systems of God of War Ragnarok are deep and complex, there are no barriers to entry. Within the first cutscene, you will be immersed in the world, and during your first battle, you will know the power of a god.
10Watch The Recap If You Didn’t Play God Of War (2018)
The God of War series has an immersive story, so get yourself familiar with the setting before you begin. The franchise has nine mainline entries, however, the 2018 game kicked off the Norse story arc for the new era of God Of War.
On the main title screen, the option ‘God of War Recap’ will play a short video retelling the ongoing storyline. While being familiar with the entire franchise will provide extra context, the developers at Sony Santa Monica made sure that Ragnarok was accessible to everyone.

9Make The Combat Difficulty Work For You
Choosing the proper combat difficulty for your play style will ensure that you have the best God of War experience. If you find that the combat is too easy or too difficult, you won’t get the most enjoyment out of your playthrough.
The difficulty options can be increased or decreased during your journey, with the one exception that you cannot increase to Give Me God of War (you may only access this option with a new game). When selecting your difficulty, lean towards choosing the highest option that you feel comfortable with, because when the game is too easy it loses some of its charms.

8Fine-Tune The Accessibility Options
To get the most out of Ragnarok, you should also tweak the accessibility options to match your preferences and expectations. Santa Monica Studio has included a wide array of options to ensure each player has a good time in God of War.
In addition to visual and audio options, the settings for Auto Pick Up, Mini-game Style, and Puzzle Timing may all be worth your time to explore. Players who don’t prefer the button mashing of quick-time events may also want to take a look at the Repeated Button Presses option for a streamlined experience.

7Search Open Areas And Destroy Everything
Exploring the landscape in Ragnarok is not only interesting and satisfying, but it will reward you as well. There are treasures, resources, and collectibles hiding in plain sight around every corner in God of War. When you reach a new area for the first time, search everywhere and destroy everything.

Plateaus that seem inaccessible may have unique treasures, vases and boxes can conceal resources, and other adventurers have often left their artifacts behind. Gathering these collectibles can add lore to the game, upgrade your character, and give you valuable materials to enhance your weapons and armor.
6Experiment With Gear, Upgrades, And Abilities
Ragnarok has a wide variety of ways tocustomize your loadout, try experimenting with these options to enhance your gameplay. Whenever you unlock a new component of the game, put it on and try it out.
Even if you’ve already found your favorite attacks, or you love stacking Strength over all other stats, challenge yourself to try everything. It can be tempting to stick with a loadout you find comfortable, but you don’t know what you’re missing if you don’t try the new options. Ragnarok provides you with some very powerful abilities early on in the game, however, you may find that you prefer the skills you unlock along the way if you give them a chance.

5Get Familiar With The Controls, Or Change Them
A game’s controls are your connection to the experience, visit the control options if you aren’t loving the default settings. Once you’ve experienced some environmental traversal and engaged in combat, change any controls that don’t feel fluid.
It can be off-putting if you press Triangle thinking that it will interact with an object when you should have pressed Circle, and it can be deadly to interact with an enemy attack instead of evading. Changing even a button or two can be the difference between frustration and triumph.

4Block, Evade, And Dodge Enemy Attacks
It can be enticing to hold Forward and spam your attacks but don’t forget to play defense as well. Full-out aggression isn’t always the best strategy, blocking or causing your enemy to miss can be a beneficial tactic to use.
Well-timed blocks can trigger Kratos to parry and stagger some enemies, leaving them vulnerable to follow-up attacks. Other attacks need to be dodged, or you’ll be put at risk of being stunned or staggered. Understanding the push and pull of Ragnarok’s combat will increase your overall damage even if it means playing more defense.
3Don’t Just Button Mash, Use Your Arsenal
Spamming your Light and Heavy Attacks can be fun, especially during Spartan Rage, but don’t forget about yourrunic attacksand weapon skills. Early in the game, you obtain your first weapon skill, Frost Awaken. This is a strong Leviathan Axe ability that you should use early and often by briefly holding down Triangle before attacking.

Weapon skills and runic attacks can add extra damage, increase the area of effect, and provide crowd control functionality that is superior to your normal attacks. While you’re hacking away with your weapons, mix in some of the powerful skills and see how they affect your output.
2Audio Cues Are Extremely Helpful
While you’re banging your way through hoards of enemies or contemplating a puzzle, pay attention to audio cues that come from allies and enemies. You aren’t alone in Ragnarok, your companions will alert you to danger and even assist with combat strategies.
You’ll hear voice lines like, “left flank” and “grab him” which can help Kratos keep track of his surroundings and finish fights more efficiently. Enemies will also help you in battle by telegraphing certain actions with a grunt or voice line. Listen closely to the audio cues at your disposal, they can often lead you to a solution for the problem at hand.
1Always Check The High Ground
Ranged attacks can be deadly if they aren’t dealt with, so don’t leave them for the end of the fight, deal with them first. One of the biggest dangers in Ragnarok is being ambushed from above. Ranged enemies can use the high ground to catch you off guard and launch attacks from relative safety.
When entering a new area, always scan the high ground for enemies and take them out quickly. Attackers rushing directly at you are generally more of a distraction than a real threat, it’s best to identify the high-damage and low-health enemies perched on the high ground and take them down first.
