George R.R. Martin had tall promise for the ending ofA Song of Ice and Fire

George R.R. Martinis not giving any more predictions as to whenThe Winds of Winterwill get published. He failed to keep up with his earlier announcements regarding the release of the book. During an interview withPenguin Random Housein 2022, he shared that he was ripping apart chapters from the ever-growing pages of the book.

Back in 2012, he toldAdrias Newsthat he had comfortably written 400 pages. However, somewhere along the way, Martin lost the vision for his final two books. Many believe thatMartin’s confidence took a hitafter the ridiculous expectations fromGame of Thronesfans. It is also possible that the series’ poor conclusion also affected the way Martin perceived his book.

During his old interview, Martin seemed more sure of what he was doing. He shared that he knew he would disappoint some of his fans, who were already making theories about who would take the throne. He quoted Rick Nelson, sharing,“you’re able to’t please anyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.”He shared:

Peter Dinklage in a still from Game of Thrones

So I will write the two last books as good as I am capable of and I think the great majority of my readers would be happy with it. Trying to please everyone is a horrible mistake; I don’t say you should annoy your readers but art isn’t a democracy and should never be a democracy. It’s my story and those people who get annoyed should go out and write their own stories; the stories they wanna read.

However, he made a big mistake when he took too long to complete it which resulted in the TV series outrunning his story. By the time the series reached its final season, it had to completely invent the storyline since Martin’s sixth book was incomplete. The series finale faced massive backlash from the fandom.
