George R.R. Martin recently provided a new update on his blog about the development ofThe Winds of Winterand the upcoming sequel toFire & Blood. WhileFire & Bloodwas released in 2018 and subsequently adapted to the screen in the form ofHouse of the Dragon, his forthcoming sixth novel remains in progress.

Now, what fans have noticed in his latest entry was the not-so-unique titleBlood & Fire. There may be a reason, though the author has not explicitly mentioned it, and it might have something to do with the Blackfyre rebellions.
What Happened In The First Blackfyre Rebellion?
House of the Dragonfans may recall the Blackfyre sword wielded by King Viserys Targaryen and King Aegon II in the show. It is the ancestral Valyrian steel weapon carried byAegon the Conquerorduring his conquest of the Seven Kingdoms.
The treasured family heirloom was passed on to several kings and princes until it was handed to King Aegon IV. On his deathbed, he gave the sword to his illegitimate son, Daemon Waters, instead of Daeron II Targaryen, his lawful descendant. The king also legitimized his bastard children which sparked the first Blackfyre rebellion.

Now known as Daemon Blackfyre, the former bastard son laid claim to the Iron Throne that led to the first of five Blackfyre rebellions. The uprising was so tremendous that it divided the realm. The major houses supported House Targaryen while the minor ones sided with House Blackfyre. When this reached Daeron’s court, he issued a warrant of arrest, which Daemon’s allies used to wage war.
Although the rebellion ultimately failed and Daemon was killed in the Battle of Redgrass Field, the uprising did not stop there. It continued for many years until the death of the last known member of the Blackfyre Pretenders, Maelys I Blackfyre.

Little is known about the Blackfyre rebellions althoughThe World of Ice & Firebook made a comprehensive discussion on it.George R.R. Martin’sBlood & Firewill most likely cover all five of them more extensively.
George R.R. Martin’sBlood & FireTitle May Hint At One Significant Event In Targaryen History
Blood & Fireseemed like an uninspired title for some fans, but when you know the history behind the Blackfyre uprising, it will make sense. During the first rebellion, Daemon Blackfyre reversed the colors of the Targaryen insignia and carried a black three-headed dragon on a red field banner.
Martin’s clever way of switching the words in the title certainly hints at the upcoming tale of the bloody rebellion that shook the Targaryen dynasty.

It remains to be seen whetherHouse of the Dragonwill adapt this narrative on screen. The author previouslyhintedat the possibility that they could continue the show beyond the Dance of the Dragons and tackle the reign of Aegon III and the Blackfyre rebellions.
House of the Dragonis currently available to watch on HBO.
