The Red Wedding was one of the most violent sequences inGame of Thrones, and its effect still lingers with fans even after all these years. For one, it wiped out two of the main protagonists in the show in the blink of an eye, and worse, the subsequent scene made everyone’s stomach turn seeing Robb Stark’s desecrated corpse paraded out in the night.

The audience was left dumbstruck after that episode, although not as devastated as the author himself. George R.R. Martin avoided writing that chapter until he finished the entire book. He knew from the start that Robb had to go, even though he was one of the heroes.
George R.R. Martin avoided writing the Red Wedding chapter
George R.R. Martinprovided an explanation as to why he wanted to kill off Robb and Catelyn Stark in his interview withEntertainment Weekly. The author, known for his novel seriesA Song of Ice and Fire, wanted a very unpredictable story that woulddefy readers’ expectations.
From the start,Richard Madden’s Robb Stark was doomed to die. Martin said that after he killed off Ned Stark, Robb’s father, people would be expecting the son to avenge his old man. So, the next obvious thing to do was to get rid of the heir of House Stark.

Doing so was a tough undertaking for Martin. “It was the hardest scene I’ve ever had to write,” he told the outlet. He was already two-thirds through with his novel but admitted skipping over that chapter because he was not ready to devise the deaths of his beloved characters. After finishing the book, he went back and finally faced the challenge. “It was like murdering two of your children,’ he said of Robb’s and Catelyn’s deaths.
