George R.R. Martin’s original plan forA Song of Ice and Firecontained many scenes that we never witnessed in the novels and the television series, one of which included a duel between two prominent characters fromGame of Thrones. Fans would surely feel robbed of the opportunity after they learn that Joffrey Baratheon and Robb Stark were planned to go against each other.

The deaths of these characters, which we have seen in the show, were very different from the initial plan; although, it’s fair to say that their demise in the series was far more brutal and memorable than in the outline.
George R.R. Martin planned a duel between Joffrey Baratheon and Robb Stark
While the season finale ofGame of Thronesfailed to make a positive impact, the show had some of the greatest death scenes that forever changed the history of television. The franchise remains popular and relevant, and this is why fans were surprised after discoveringGeorge R.R. Martin’s 1993 letter to his publisher containing an outline forA Song of Ice and Fire.
In one of the paragraphs, the author noted that after Eddard Stark was executed following his accusation of treason, his son Robb Stark would call the banners in rebellion (viaBusiness Insider):

All the north will be inflamed by war. Robb will win several splendid victories, and maim Joffrey Baratheon on the battlefield…
This suggests that Martin intended a revenge fight between House Stark and House Lannister, with the hero that fans loved severely injuring the most hated villain in the series. Surely, many viewers would cheer on this scene, as they did during thecontroversial Purple Wedding scenewhere Joffrey died of poison, although nothing is more satisfying than seeing an honorable Stark serve justice for the death of his father.

However, in Martin’s original outline, Robb dies in battle after failing to stand against Jaime and Tyrion Lannister. In the show, his end was far more inhumane after he was stabbed during theRed Wedding, a massacre orchestrated by Tywin Lannister, Walder Frey, and Roose Bolton. Robb’s corpse was decapitated and his direwolf’s head was sewn on in its place, and later on, paraded around for everyone to see.

What’s more interesting, though, is that the Red Wedding wasn’t originally part of Martin’s outline. As he said before, he likes his stories to evolve and change as he works on them.
Changing the death scenes of Joffrey Baratheon and Robb Stark was so much better
Everyone would certainly love to see Robb avenge his father by killing Joffrey, but it was better that Martin changed his plan and wrote both the Red Wedding and the Purple Wedding scenes. Both events were of high significance, and they served as a pivotal moment in the conflict between the different houses in Westeros.

Still, it was great to know Martin’s original vision for hisGame of Thronesstory. It gave fans an idea of how the author expanded the mythology and lore of the characters, as well as the events he omitted and replaced.
Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
