Fans can say Florence Pugh was born to playBlack Widow’s Yelena Belova, but she wasn’t the first actress in mind when Marvel Studios planned to bring the character to the big screen. In fact, one of her previous co-stars was the studio’s first choice.

Little Womenstar Saoirse Ronan andHarry Potteractress Emma Watson were considered for the part of the famed sister of Natasha Romanoff. Because of Pugh’s unique chemistry with theBlack Widowcast, she ultimately snagged the coveted role.
Saoirse Ronan Was So Close To PlayingBlack Widow’s Yelena Belova
In an interview viaThe Townpodcast, reporter Justin Kroll revealed Marvel Studios was eyeing four-time Oscar nomineeSaoirse Ronanfor the role of Yelena Belova.
The Saoirse thing, I’ve heard stuff she’s passed on. She passed on Florence’s role in Black Widow, the sister. Marvel has not been her cup of tea, and she was not interested.

Interestingly, theLady Birdstar admitted in a previous interview that she’s aware of the rumors that the studio initially wanted her as Scarlet Witch inAvengers: Age of Ultron. Ronan enthusiastically tellsThe Mary Sue:
I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would. I love Joss [Whedon] and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it’s very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I’d love to be in it.

Unfortunately, in the same year, she debunked joining the comic book film empire viaIFTN: “That’s not happening, no. I think that was just one of those little rumors floating about.” Fans would wonder what made her change her mind or why Marvel Studios did not push through with their original plan to cast Ronan.
She had her second chance to join the superhero world when she was approached for the role of Yelena Belova, but it seems the opportunity to become a Marvel hero does not appeal to her anymore.

Regardless, it was a blessing in disguise for Pugh on top of her acting skills and on-screen charisma. No other actress can portray the Russian spy turned second Black Widow of the MCU.

With any franchise, it’s always slightly daunting because of what you’re going to bring and what are you going to play. I think for any actor that is automatically going to be a big deal, whether you personally watch them or you don’t.

Ever since her debut in 2021’sBlack Widow, she has also appeared in Disney+’sHawkeyeand will soon join the team inThunderbolts*.
