Five Retro Wolverine Games to Play
Wolverine(1991)
Released in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, this action game is about as retro as they come for Wolverine - not including the classicX-Menarcade game. This first title follows Wolverine, who has been captured by Magneto and Sabretooth and planted on a desert island. The clawed hero must survive deadly traps and enemies before facing the aforementioned villains in a gripping finale.
Wolverine: Adamantium Rage(1994)
Wolverine then progressed to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis in 1994, within this platformer. In this plot, Wolverine goes to Canada to discover the secrets of his past, after a transmission shows him the procedure that fused adamantium to his bones. Other Marvel characters featured in the game include Albert, The Hunter of Darkness, Sabretooth (who was cut from the SNES version), Lady Deathstrike, Cyber, Shinobi Shaw, Bloodscream, and Trevor Fitzroy.
X-Men: Wolverine’s Rage(2001)
Wolverine then made a brief appearance on the Game Boy Color in 2001 with some side-scrolling action. Lady Deathstrike appears again in an attempt to build a weapon that will succeed in melting Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton, and Wolverine must do whatever he can to stop her.
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge(2003)
This pivotal 2003 release for the GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Mac, PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox featured the iconic Mark Hamill, who voiced the titular hero. Players get to see Wolverine infiltrate the Weapon X facility to figure out his past. The hero must also find an antidote to the Shiva Virus circulating in his bloodstream. Additionally, this is the first game to match Hugh Jackman’s likeness after his success in theX-Menfilms.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine(2009)
Lastly, this 2009 game for the Nintendo DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, and Xbox 360 presented hack-and-slash action with Wolverine, voiced by none other than Hugh Jackman himself. The plot is ten times more elaborate in this final game by Activision, before its license expired, and features Sabretooth, Wade Wilson, and more in a harrowing adventure written by Marc Guggenheim.
