Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Ending Explained
With the dust finally settling; let’s break down the complex ending to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Throughout the main story, players spend a fair amount of time with Zack as he struggles with Shinra and keeping an unconscious Cloud and Aerith safe. However, during our time with Cloud and the gang, Zack is nowhere to be seen. So, what’s going on with Zack Fair? Is he alive? Is he dead? Well, the answer is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no.

Zack Fair Is Dead
When it comes to the main timeline where we are following Cloud and the gang, it would seem that Zack Fair is dead. When the group visits Zack’s old hometown, Aerith meets with Zack parents. They tell Aerith they haven’t heard from their son in a very long time, which means that he has been missing at the very least.
Cloud is later struck with the memory of his mission with Sephiroth. During this mission, a soldier was swept down the river. Sephiroth seems to indicate that the soldier couldn’t have made it. While this is initially presented as a nameless soldier, Cloud later has the memory of this being Zack Fair. The revelation really shakes Cloud, as the two seemed to be friends. Cloud is disturbed that he could have forgotten something so important to him.
Zack’s Death on the mission with Cloud and Sephiroth mean he didn’t die in a firefight with Shinra soldiers like we saw in the original game.
When Cloud has this memory, Tifa confirms the events for him. It turns out that she knew about Zack and the events of that day the whole time, but she never said anything to avoid hurting Cloud further. While this is well-intentioned, it’s also unfortunate, as Aerith has also been wondering about Zak’s ultimate faith. Cloud agrees to let Tifa break the news to Aerith.

Zack Fair Is Alive
Much of the game takes place from Zack’s perspective, but his world is a little different from ours. One small example is that Stamp, the mascot for Shinra, appears to be a different dog on all of the artwork in Zack’s world. Much of Zack’s world is similar, if not the same, which makes the differences all the more important.
In his own timeline, Zack is the main playable character. At the moment where he would have died in a firefight with many Shinra soldiers, he defeats the soldiers and carries Cloud to safety. This series of events closely follows what we saw in the original game, except Zack lives in this scenario. After getting Cloud to safety and saving Aerith from Shinra, Zack spends the majority of his time caring for an unconscious Cloud and Aerith. In this timeline, he also seems to still be with Aerith. Sephiroth is nowhere to be seen in Zack’s timeline until the very end.
In the final clash with Sephiroth, the timelines seem to merge enough for Cloud and Zack to fight Sephiroth together. As confusing as these events are for Cloud, they’re even more confusing for Zack who is experiencing these events without any of the context Cloud and Aerith have. After the final fight with Sephiroth, Zack is back in his own timeline with a lot to consider.

The Future Of Zack Fair
While the future seems a little uncertain for Zack, it’s fair to assume we’ll be seeing more of him in the third installment of Final Fantasy 7. Zack now knows of the existence of other realities, or at least the one other reality we’ve been playing through with Cloud and friends. Zack is living a much more isolated experience, but the knowledge that there’s a larger movement fighting for the fate of the world seems to bolster his spirits. He’s alone in this world, but he isn’t alone in his fight. He also knows about the possibility of merging timelines once again and wants to be ready for that day. It’s hard to predict what Zack will do from here, but we can assume that he’ll continue to care for the Cloud and Aerith who exist within his own timeline.
