There you are: one of 14 passengers aboard a train. You are dropped off at the outskirts of the town of Prehevil, where you are given three days to uncover the town’s secrets. Before you know it, you are forced into a battle royale event known as the Termina Festival, of which there can be only one winner, all the while a grinning moon leers down at you, delighting in the suffering and chaos. This is Fear and Hunger 2: Termina, and we are about to enter a world of your most primal fears…

Released last year, Termina takes all the best aspects ofthe first gameand evolves them. All the trademarks are here: an unforgiving environment with permadeath (if one of your party members dies, they’re gone forever), and a limb-dismemberment system, where you can target specific body parts on your opponent to rob them of additional attacks, as well as certain abilities. This applies to you as well, meaning if you’re not careful, your opponent can disable you by cutting offyourlimb(s). Hunger and maintaining your sanity are also returning, and you’ll need everything you can get to survive the Termina Festival.

Fear and Hunger Termina Characters Train

While the first game had us descending into a dungeon of death and disease, Termina features a more open space, allowing for more freedom to approach situations however you like. This game takes place many grinning moons after the events of the first game, set in the 1940s.You have access to more advanced weaponry here, like guns, and like in the first game you may shoot down enemies without engaging with them; a practical choice, considering how risky each encounter is.

Adding to the game’s complexity is a wider range of playable characters, all with their own unique starting abilities. As mentioned earlier, you have guns, so maybe you fancy ranged weaponry and taking out enemies safely. Choosing Levi maxes out your proficiency with firearms, giving them additional damage and less chance to miss.

Maybe you want to increase your dismal survival chances, so you opt for Abella, who can use her skills as a mechanic to craft bear/booby traps, specialized weapons and even open electric doors. A popular pick is O’saa, who has the ability increase the attack of magic powers to all party members.

There are opportunities to learn new skills, in the form of absorbing souls to use at a hexen table which grants these skills. This allows for more versatility and makes the game more accessible, giving you a greater selection of options to choose as you progress. Just like the first game, you get no experience points after each successful battle, only actual experience for how to better approach situations in the future.

The story expands on the influence of the gods and deities in this world, namely the Moon God Rher, who is the main antagonist and the one who sent us here. Also known as ‘The Trickster Moon God,’ Rher does not take kindly to disobedience, and shows it by inflicting transgressors with a condition called ‘Moonscorch,’ which causes its victims to suffer otherworldly deformations.

The first enemies you come across are villagers, who are desperately picking away at their skin while raving about a ‘green hue.’ These are the Moonscorched, and they are but one taste of the horrors residing in Prehivel. In addition to crazed townfolk, you will have to battle devious genies that manifest through radios, dodge the homicidal sorceries of the infamous Pocketcat, and eventually meet atop a tower to face-off with Rher himself, which is every bit as majestic and intangible as it sounds.

I’ve love-hated making another trip of misery though Prehevil’s cursed streets, where madness reigns supreme and savagery and tenacity are what separates those living, and those dead. Prepare to die countless times, learn morbid lessons and pray your coin flip will be lucky as the Termina festival reaches it’s cosmic conclusion.
