Epic’s Not Generous, They Need Players

A few weeks ago, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweenyannounced that hundreds of millions of free games had been redeemed each year through the Epic Games launcher. He said these free games were muchmore successful than “not so good investments” they’d made forplatform exclusivity.

At first glance, Epic Games seems benevolent, wanting nothing more than to give gamers free games to enjoy. But,they’re a corporation, and corporations are businesses first. In fact, the entirefree games program was a bid to push gamers away from Epic’s competition, Steam, which clearly did not work.

Steam players numbers have beenalmost 3x Epic’sin recent years.

Sweeny’s comments may make it seem like Epic’s glad everyone’s getting free games, but that’s not necessarily true. This strategy has successfully brought in players, but it’s also theonly reasonmany use the launcher in the first place.

Last year, in a post on X,Sweeny spoke about companies with generous policies initially, and then pulling the rug from under their users. The irony is apparently lost on Sweeny, as Epic canceled player-to-player trading on the Rocket League the same year.

There are no plans to change the free games program now whatsoever, but it’simportant to be cautious regardless.

When you go to download the free Fallout collection, and Wild Car Football, remember that Vault-Tec and Nuka Cola aren’t real, but their inspirations are.
