A brand-new story trailer for theElden RingDLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, has been released into the wild, and despite the visuals being nothing short of spectacular dark fantasy, the context of several scenes left an air of ambiguity and shocked some viewers into giggling puzzlement.
2024 will deliver a solid playground forSoulslike fans, with the August release ofBlack Myth: Wukong- which is said to harbor aneasier difficultythan most games of this ilk - following the summer release of Elden Ring’s DLC. New weapons, enemies, equipment, magic, and more are on offer withinFromSoftware’sexpansion, but the recent trailer framing the narrative saw fans’ confusion match the hype.

Shadow Of The Erdtree Looks Big Enough To Be Elden Ring 2
Elden Ring’s expansion is shaping up to be everything I ever wanted, and then some more.
The nearly two-minute trailer was a fiery affair, flaunting the DLC’s main attraction, villain and demigod, Messmer the Impaler, whose flame caused Miquella to venture into new territory. The dense lore is laid on thick, which is something fans have come to expect in FromSoftware’s teasers, and the final scenes teed up Miquella’s conquest to overthrow Messmer alongside a band of new warriors.

Several viewersagreedthe trailer was rather vague, expressing “I didn’t understand a single word, but I’m so hype,” but most were happy to stay mesmerized, saying “I did not understand one bit of what just happened but I love it.”
The main point of interest - aside from some fans sharing their foot fetish - arrived within the opening five seconds of the trailer, showing a female’s hand retrieving something from a bloodied, fleshy mass. A good few fans were quick to flag the sexual suggestiveness of the scene, admitting “I’m confused what her hand was in…” with others in disbelief sharing “Ayooo, what the hell did I just witness at the start.”

However, discussions on X quickly shone a beacon of context on the imagery to put devilish minds to rest. Elden Ring enthusiast @empyrealviolethighlightedthe “most intriguing part” of the trailer, suggesting the opening shot detailed “Marika plucking golden thread out of a corpse.” The user then dove deeper, explaining “The ‘seduction and the betrayal' was Marika being tempted to betray the original god of the world, building a new order from its golden flesh.”
Elden Ring loreis fascinating to dissect, and fans love to share theories and tidbits to make sense of the dialogue, but regardless of the ambiguity, Shadow of the Erdtree is going to be the fantastical and horrific event of the summer.
