The game earned 9s and 10s across the board and received a mountain of accolades. Baldur’s Gate 3Early Access Allowed The Game to Win Best Music Award

In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in early access periods in games. It’s a great way for games to find their intended audience and allows that same audience to contribute valuable feedback for continued development. It’s especially a boon for small indie developers, but even larger studios are this formula.

However, many in the community feel that the early access formula has drifted from its original purpose, with large developers now using it to deliver half-baked games that are built on the promise that they’ll be complete someday. When Larian decided to launchBaldur’s Gate3in early access, it faced a lot of criticism, but the developers proved everyone wrong.

“You shouldn’t try to make a game like BG3”: Larian Boss Has Already Revealed Why Baldur’s Gate 3 Would’ve Destroyed Most Studios

Baldur’s Gate 3was in development for a whopping nine years, with three years spent in Early Access. Giving players access to the game with that much time between its Early Access Period and full release period gave the developers plenty of time to refine and make Baldur’s Gate into what it is today. It’s all due to the game’s Early Access that it won a number of awards, including the BAFTA’s Video Games award for Best Music.

In an interview with Mirror,Baldur’s Gate 3‘s music composer, Borsilav Slavov, chatted about the game’s development and the mighty task of nailing the game’s incredible soundtrack. According to him, Larian’s early access approach forBaldur’s Gatewas what led him to craft high-quality soundtracks that have left a lasting impression on an entire generation of gamers.

That’s why I’m behind the concept of early access. Because we are willing to make changes, we are we willing to make iterations, we are willing to listen to what the people have to say. Early access gave me this opportunity.

Larian’s decision to release the game in early access in 2020 allowed Slavov and other developers to listen to crucial player feedback. He felt that a massive weight was lifted off his shoulders as a result when he realized players appreciated the game’s musical direction. This allowed him to focus more and finetune the music score before the game’s launch in 2023.

We can’t overstate the potential impact of a well-crafted and thoughtfully complemented music score in a game. Just like it does in cinema, a good soundtrack can enhance emotions, create atmosphere, set the tone, and elevate the entire gameplay. Creating the musical experience takes time, and forBaldur’s Gate 3,an early access period allowed that to happen.

Larian Will Most Likely Take Time For It’s Next Game Thanks To Early Access Model

There’s no doubt thatBaldur’s Gate 3changed a lot over the course of its three years in early access, and not just in the form of its content additions. We saw multiple UI changes, tutorial tweaks, and a barrage of dialogue edits. While hammering bugs was clearly a major part of this early access period benefit, the finetuning was a key to the game’s success.

“That’s a consequence”: The Baldur’s Gate 3 Decision That’ll Make You Miss Out on Devastatingly Large Amount of Cutscenes

It’s clear that the focus for anyfuture Larian gameswill be launching in early access to retain players by constantly polishing the title to bring an ultimate experience. By doing this over a number of years, any title can receive constant reviews by gamers without slipping into live-service chaos. A longer development time doesn’t always lead to quality games, but taking time to iron out small wrinkles certainly enhances everything.

Players who purchasedBaldur’s Gate 3in early access even got upgraded to the game’s Digital Deluxe version for no cost. Fans are likely expecting something similar to this with any of the studio’s future early access releases, and it would be fair considering how crucial pre-release feedback was forBaldur’s Gate 3to break all sorts of records.
