While fan reception seems to have beenquite positivetoTitanfallbattle royale gameApex Legends'“surprise"release on Monday, some people, myself included, found it weird that EA was willing to release aTitanfallbattle royale game so close toBattlefield V’s Firestormbattle royale mode, which is poised to launchsometime in March. As you may remember, many attributedTitanfall 2’slackluster performance to the game being released quite close toBattlefield 1.
Worrying that this may happen once again, possibly to the underperformingBattlefield Vthis time, an investor asked EA CEO Andrew Wilson if the publisher believed any tension would be built up between the two battle royale titles during a Q&A. Apparently, EA doesn’t believe this will happen as “while they sit inside the battle royale genre, they are two very different types of experiences.” That being said, the CEO did admit that “On some level, there may also be some crossover.”
“What we have seen is that the community who plays these types of games is hundreds of millions of people strong,” comments Andrew. “Given the size of the community, given the different types of gameplay even with the battle royale genre, we believe those two modes will fit very well together in the community.“Fortnitealone has amassedwell over 200 million playersso I could see why EA thinks there is enough room to provide two different battle royale games.
Andrew Wilson then delved into how each battle royale experience will able to stand out from each other. “We think that there is an opportunity to deliver the fast-paced gameplay that isApex Legendsand where that game goes to a big part of the community,” he said. “Also, the strategic play, the vehicle play, the things that are unique to theBattlefieldbattle royale mode, will offer differentiation of play for a different part of that community.”
WhileBattlefield V’sbattle royale mode, titledFirestorm, won’t be releasing until March, bothBattlefield VandApex Legendsare currently available across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. WhileApex Legendsis free-to-play,Battlefield Vis a retail game andyou can pick up a copy for yourself on Amazon right now.
