TheDunefranchise is expanding in farther regions of space, and time and in a story-telling format. Frank Herbert’s novels inspired the films and it inspired the upcoming game developed by Funcom:Dune: Awakening.

Arrakis is the main setting of Dune: Awakening, and has been greatly influenced by Denis Villeneuve’s Dine films.

Coming off the heels of the wildly successful and critically acclaimed filmDune: Part Twowhich was also directed by the legendary visionary Denis Villeneuve has made the universe even more popular after his two films which the game will greatly benefit from.

Dune: Awakening Will Quench The Desert Thirst For Dune 3

Funcom has made a name for themselves with their incredible work with previous massive multiplayer games, and the universe ofDuneis their latest sandbox with no puns intended. The developers intended for players to be thrown into the desert world of Arrakis as they explore, fight, and most importantly survive the dangers of planetary hazards like the deadly sandworms, ambushes, and fellow players.

Players will take on the role of the Sleeper as they set out on a journey for survival. Arrakis is a harsh and unforgiving place that will push the people to their limit. Incorporating existing elements of the massively multiplayer online gaming format with the world and lore of Frank Herbert’sDuneis a potent mix that can lead to a fun time overall.

“It’s part of what drives them through the game”: Funcom’s Dune: Awakening Mechanic Proves they Understand Frank Herbert’s Sci-Fi Masterpiece as Much as Denis Villeneuve

The films have greatly increased the popularity of the franchise, and it may not be as well known compared to the likes ofStar Wars,Star Trek,or any space saga with science fiction,Duneis a more mature and ambitious take on the genre.

The War For Spice Will Be Present In Dune: Awakening

The beauty of Arrakis was greatly overlooked by the first film, but inDune 2, audiences got to see a bit more as did the protagonist Paul Atreides and his journey to recruit the Fremen and fight for their home. The game will not be an adaptation but will feature characters from the films, asplayers scavenge resources and forge alliances, the deadly desert storms can wipe away any structure built which will force them to keep moving and raiding.

Greg Fraiser, the Oscar-winning cinematographer spoke of how vast the desert was and the developers utilized Unreal Engine 5 to get a more realistic lighting system. Funcom wants the world to feel as deadly as it was described from the source material while honoring the films and bringing something new to the table. It is a war for survival and it is up to the Sleeper on how they will take the challenge.
