It truly feels like centuries now just waiting for George R.R. Martin to drop his long-overdue sixth novel,The Winds of Winter. The book in question has been in progress since around 2010, and he’s still working on it in between dealing with many other projects on his plate.

What would fans do then while waiting for Martin to finish his book? Certainly, many are coming up with their own ideas and theories as to how the story would unfold and if it would differ from HBO’sGame of Thrones. Most of these speculations are posted on fan forums, which the author tends to avoid.
George R.R. Martin skips fan theories on the Internet
George R.R. Martinconfessed to avoiding going on fan forum pages on the Internet for fear that he might discover someone has already cracked the code on his novel. He’s also staying away from it to avoid getting inspiration from other people’s ideas.
In his interview withTalks at Google, he revealed he used to read all the fan theories on Internet boards during the mid-‘90s, but then, it came to a point where he thought this practice would affect his writing.

What if they’re guessing the things that I haven’t revealed yet? What if they guessed them correctly? How does that affect me? Do I then say, oh my god, they figured it out already. I better change it. Or do I just ignore it and plow ahead? And what if they come up with better ideas than the ones I had? Do I steal them?
These possibilities did not seem appealing so he told himself to try and keep his distance from these fan forums. Still, he gets hundreds of emails and people asking him for public talks about his books. Martin said he’s aware of some of the existing fan theories, although he tries his best not to pay too much attention to them because he does not want to be impacted.

“That’s the feeling we got in the books”: Game of Thrones Was Inevitably Heading to Disaster After Creator’s Confession During ‘The Red Wedding’
This is Martin’s self-imposed rule on his writing career, which many would say is a great way to keep the authenticity of his work. Indeed, changing his narrative based on the opinions of fans may have implications that are irreversible and might even damage the franchise.
The Winds of Winterwill be finished by now if George R.R. Martin bent his rule
On the other hand, Martin continues to show his struggle finishingThe Winds of Winter. He is busy juggling several commitments, and he’s got no time to just sit down and come up with storylines tofinish the novel.
George R.R. Martin: I Only Started Writing Game of Thrones Books Because What I Originally Did “Didn’t pay very much”
Many fan theories on the Internet make total sense, and some of the speculations would perfectly fit into the plot. If only Martin allows himself to read some of them, then it might speed up his writing progress. But, as the author declared, he continues to live by his principles, and fans have to respect that.
